Nintendo Hints It Will Continue Extensive Switch Support, Even After New-Gen Hardware Release

Nintendo hasn’t given up on the Switch yet, its best-selling console. A new financial update from Nintendo reveals that the company plans to continue to support its Switch console for a long time after the release of the rumored next-generation hardware, expected to be released in 2019.

Nintendo has had a busy week. The company revealed that Super Mario Bros. Wonder was the best-selling Super Mario title in its series, and that it is working on a live action Legend of Zelda film. Yesterday, we learned that the Switch had sold over 132,000,000 units. This follows the success of The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom & Pikmin 4. Nintendo is now revealing a little more about its future plans for the Switch.

The financial report states that Nintendo Switch will enter its eighth year of existence in March 2024. We will release more titles and content on Nintendo Switch, without having to adhere to the conventional concept of platform lifecycle.

The last sentence above suggests that Nintendo may continue to support its Switch even after it releases its new console. It’s not surprising that Nintendo would continue to support the Switch, even after its next console is released.

Nintendo says that they “would love to keep seeing many people play Nintendo Switch to maintain the momentum of our business.” Nintendo is well aware that if the Switch was to be sunsetted a second too early, it would end this momentum.

Nintendo also revealed in its financial report that as of September 20, 2023 there were over 330,000,000 Nintendo Accounts. The company noted, “Even in regions without the Nintendo Switch, our mobile apps brought Nintendo Accounts to users all around the world.” The company says that it “will strive to spread Nintendo Account further and make it a crucial business foundation for Nintendo in the future.”

And 117 millions users of the Switch play it every year. This shows the strength and longevity of the Switch as it begins its eighth market-year.
