Nintendo Acquires SRD, A Development Studio It Has Worked With For Decades

Nintendo announced it will acquire SRD Co. LTD. (a partner in development for many titles under franchises such as Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda).

If you’ve been paying attention to the video game industry as of late, you likely already know that 2022 has so far been defined by one word: acquisitions.

Take-Two Interactive was the parent company of Grand Theft Auto and announced in January it would be buying mobile firm Zynga. Microsoft then announced that it would be purchasing Activision Blizzard which controls Overwatch and Call of Duty for a staggering $68.7billion. Two weeks later, Sony also revealed that Bungie was being purchased by the Bungie developer of Destiny 2 for $3.6billion.

Nintendo revealed earlier this month that despite acquisitions happening throughout the industry, it wasn’t going to change its investment plans. It also revealed that it’s not against acquisitions they deem necessary and it seems acquiring SRD was the next necessary move for the Kyoto-based company.

SRD was established in 1979. It has been closely associated with Nintendo since decades. Video Games Chronicle. The studio not only worked with Nintendo for Mario and Zelda but also helped to create Animal Crossing entries. Game Builder Garage, Game Builder Garage and Ring Fit Adventure are all examples of its involvement. The acquisition is expected to close by April 1, 2022. At the time this article was written, no price has been disclosed.

Nintendo said in a statement that acquiring SRD will “serve to strengthen the management base of SRD and secure the availability of software development resources for Nintendo,” according to Video Games Chronicle

Today’s news about this acquisition is the first following Nintendo’s purchase of Luigi’s Mansion 3 developer, Next Level Games, back in January of last year.
