Domee Shi, who directed Pixar’s short film BaoThis project is unique in 2018. It’s a personal movie that addresses universal themes. You can find it here. It’s time to turn redShi is a joyous celebrator of early adolescence. It’s a period often described as awkward and creepy. Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Reynolds team up once again One Guy Free Shawn Levy, director The Adam Project, Netflix’s new sci-fi family adventure. Reynolds plays Adam, the time-traveling pilot. He accidentally crashes-lands in 2022. Reynolds must team up with his 12-year-old self and save the day. Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner play young Adam’s parents, Zoe Saldana plays the older Adam’s wife, and Catherine Keener rounds out the cast as the time-traveling villain.

Our review:

One major factor behind the film’s rat-a-tat energy is star Ryan Reynolds: He’s Deadpool, for God’s sake. His brand is built on his trademark rapid-fire sarcasm. Writer-director Shawn Levy has already collaborated with Reynolds (on 2021’s One Guy Free() Eight episodes were shot of Stranger Things,So combining them is the next logical step. When Levy and Reynolds — both co-producers on the film — play to their strengths, The Adam ProjectThis sci-fi comedy is a good laugher and a great source of fun. But in moments where undiluted sweetness is required, the film’s glib writing stands out in a negative way.

Ghostface chasing a victim in Scream 2022

Fifth installment The venerable horror series is a slasher metacomedy. Ready or not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Woodsboro’s franchise is back more than ten years after its events in The Scream 4Nearly a quarter century since the original Scream, a new generation joined Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) to face off against Dewey Riley and David Arquette. Other Crazy murderer, who has adopted the ghostly mask of the Ghostface killer. Our review:

This The ScreamTry something like Resurrections by The MatrixThis was done to push self-referentiality past its limits to make it look like a possible decades-later cash in, but still to broker a fulfilling reunion with the beloved original characters. The problem is that Matrix comparison doesn’t always flatter the 2022 The Scream. Campbell, Cox, and Arquette all have chances to shine, and Campbell’s rueful confidence even approaches something vaguely touching. However, this movie can be a bit overwhelming and the sheer number of characters sometimes makes it seem like there is more to life than fear.

Dune

You should be watching:You can stream HBO Max on your computer.

Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in Dune.

Denis Villenueve’s adaptation of the celebrated Frank Herbert sci-fi epic stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, son and heir to the powerful Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac), who is forced to leave the planet of his birth to become the newly appointed steward of Arrakis, a desert planet home to a coveted resource. There are sword fights, politics, intrigue, betrayal, drama, and oh — these colossal creatures called sandworms that burst out of the ground before devouring people. Honestly, there’s way too much to explain about DuneWe can’t fit everything in one paragraph or even one movie. This is why we created this guide. But enough of all that, let’s home in on the biggest question: should you set aside time this weekend to watch Villeneuve’s latest, hulking sci-fi extravaganza? Our review.

If you can get lost in the cocoon of production, costume, and art-design opulence, and sink into the Big Event angle of it all — which is why people go to the movies, isn’t it? — the film, styled as Part 1: DuneIt is a powerfully evocative film. The problem, though, is the film’s pervasive emotional emptiness. Villeneuve, his co-writers Jon Spaihts and (of PassengersAnd Prometheus) and Eric Roth, rush through character journeys, and shortchange ostensible hero Paul Atreides (wild-hair-haver Timothée Chalamet). The entire dense mythology is not explained, and instead they recast whole communities as thinly drawn versions of popular pop-culture characters. (The Fremen have more or less been transformed into Tusken Raiders. The Bene Gesserit were). Macbeth’s witches.) All that streamlining has resulted in the loss of the connecting thread that links all the disparate parts into one cohesive entity. The film is a splendid, threadbare tapestry that unravels as you’re watching it.

Cyrano

You should be watching:You can rent for as low as $19.99 from Google Play and Amazon.

Haley Bennett as Roxanne smiles on the other side of a stone pillar from Peter Dinklage as Cyrano in Joe Wright’s Cyrano

Peter Mountain/MGM

It is an absolutely stunning musical adaptation of Cyrano De Bergerac. Joe Wright directed the production.Atonement, Pride & Prejudice), Peter Dinklage’s performance as the lead actor is eloquent. The film also received an Oscar nomination in Costume Design.

Our review:

Wright’s Cyrano […] is visually attuned and balletically sumptuous — a musical geared toward teenagers, the kind of project that’s been missing from multiplexes for a long time now. Wright’s epic romance is a reminder of how much musicals are geared for grand designs and even grander emotions.

The director takes great pleasure in the poetic movements of the human body: The bakery scene, set to the urgent notes of “Your Name,” is a sensuous arrangement of flesh and food. Black arms and white hands wrap themselves around the dough. Pastry chefs lyrically pirouette to Cyrano’s ardent verses. This is unlike other movie musicals, like In the Heights, Tick, Tick… Boom! Please see the following: Dear Evan Hansen), Cyrano’s richly framed compositions (by longtime Wright DP Seamus McGarvey) never uncut the intended majesty of the song and dance sequences.

They get more out of a meteor shower than they expected when three close friends join forces to capture footage for their social media pages. The Seed Lucy Martin starsVikings), Sophie Vavasseur (Apocalypse – Resident Evil), and Chelsea Edge (I Hate Suzie).

A Writer’s Odyssey

The main character of A Writer’s Odyssey jots down into a notebook in the middle of a crowd.

CMC Productions

The situation becomes more complicated when a man who is looking for his missing daughter hires a killer to take down a young author. This Chinese action-adventure fantasy movie falls in the category of “movies about people writing books that are coming to life.” From our list of the best action movie scenes of 2021,

A Writer’s OdysseyThe film is unbridled and grand-scale fantasy action with just enough subversion to be able to pass Chinesecensors. Although the story takes place in two different worlds, it is a fascinating tale that is enriched by dazzling action scenes. That’s a lot of words just to say something is great, but given the current state of Chinese blockbusters, the very existence of this film is a small miracle in and of itself.
