NES, SNES Creator Masayuki Uemura Dies At 78

Masayuki Emura, lead engineer of the Nintendo Entertainment System’s successor, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System has been killed.

Masayuki uemura

In 1972, Uemura started working at Nintendo. He quickly began prototyping light gun games technology which would lead to games such as Duck Hunt. He then was selected to lead Nintendo’s home console initiative, as noted by Polygon

Work began on the Famicon in 1981. It is now known as the NES (or NES West). The NES was officially launched in 1983. Uemura, along with the other team members who helped to create it, then began work on the Super Famicon, also known as the SNES. It would finally be released in 1990. 

In 2004, Uemura took his retirement and began teaching at Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto. He taught game development there. He will be remembered at the university’s memorial service, which is yet to be announced.
