MultiVersus Was July’s Best-Selling Game In The US, Thanks To Its Founder’s Pack

MultiVersus was the best-selling game in the U.S. last month, despite being a free-to-play title, due to its premium Founder’s Pack. 

The Founder’s Packs for MultiVersus came in three forms: a $39.99 standard edition, a $59.99 Deluxe edition, and a $99.99 Premium edition. This pack could be used to give players character tokens which allowed them instant fighter unlocks. It also included exclusive banners and Gleamium, an in-game currency. According to NPD’s latest numbers, MultiVersus was the top-selling U.S. title in July.

We now know which 10 games were the most popular in America last month. (Digital sales excluded)

For each platform, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was best-selling Switch title, Elden Ring best-selling PlayStation 2 game, MultiVersus best-selling Xbox One game, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 best-selling Switch video game. You can check out the top 10 for each platform in Piscatella’s thread. 

Piscatella mentions that both the July 2022 NPD thread and the PlayStation 5 topped the market for hardware spending in July and 2022 year to date, however, the Switch was most popular in both periods. Both the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 sales experienced double-digit percentage increases compared with a year earlier. This is likely because of increased supplies to satisfy ever-growing demands for these consoles. The overall video game hardware dollar sales increased 12% to $362 million compared to last year, however, year-to date spending on hardware has fallen 7% to $2.5 billion. 

Spending on videogame accessories is at a 22% decline compared with July 2021 and $148 million. The year-to date accessory spend is also down 15% at $1.2 million. Midnight Black DualSense was July’s top-selling accessory. Year-to-date, the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller has been the most popular accessory.
