MLB The Show 23 Review – Loading The Bases
Developers of annualized franchises in sports create new experiences each year to avoid criticism from the community that every release is just a “role-up update”. While real-life sports don’t evolve much year over year, developers still need to provide players with reasons to come back each time, whether that be gameplay improvements, enhanced modes, or better visuals. MLB The Show 23 does all of that while also exploring a unique avenue – history – to great effect.
MLB The Show 23 is the best entry on the field. Whether stepping up to the plate at a critical moment with runners on, taking the mound in a tense bases-loaded situation, or simply chasing down a routine flyball, the gameplay is smooth and often gorgeous thanks to new animations in this year’s entry. The commentary is also top-quality, which can be a difficult element for many sports games.
The gameplay aspect has new quirks that differentiate role-players from superstars. Additionally, fielding is more skill-based thanks to various tweaks (like an improved throwing meter). Although it may seem odd, I noticed a decrease in home runs this year. This is probably due to the way that Casual, Competitive and Simulation were set up. Of course, if anything isn’t to your liking, you can change things around in the extensive settings list, with which I experimented to great lengths. While the list of settings can be overwhelming, you will find the Options Explorer helpful in getting things just right.
Perhaps the centerpiece of this year’s new offerings is an excellent new Storylines mode highlighting The Negro Leagues. Featuring eight players, including Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson, Rube Foster, and Buck O’Neil, these chapters offer documentary-style talking-head clips before giving you control of these icons from the era of racial segregation. It was a pleasure to learn more about these great players, and play with them.
These small gameplay challenges are easy enough, and the reward of unlocking the next lesson in history made me happy to cross the goal off my bucket list. Too often, sports video games are fixated on the present and future of the sport, but MLB The Show 23 shows that looking back to the past is a rewarding avenue for developers to explore, especially when it’s about such an important but often-overlooked chapter in baseball’s history.
The player-locking mode Road to the Show (where you create an original player) has always been my favourite mode. It has been renamed March to October due to its maturation from a story-driven, single-season mode. Since its inception, the mode offers scouting and trade logic. However, you can only play the most important moments each season. Franchise mode offers you much more flexibility, breadth, and depth, but March to October tailors the experience to not only your performance but your team’s starting point, giving you a more dynamic and efficient experience.
MLB The Show 23 provides many ways to engage. You can choose to play in the team building, card collecting Diamond Dynasty or the historical-rewriting Moments modes. Your commitment level will determine how long you are willing to put forth. An improved practice mode allows you to specify the frequency and type of pitches that are thrown at your direction, or build your own stadium.
The MLB The Show 23 action is spectacular, however there are occasional logic or technical hiccups that interrupt immersion. Every few games, frustrations arose from fielders not covering bases or the computer-controlled runners misinterpreting tag-up rules and checked swings that crossed the plate clearly and were called safe. MLB The Show 23 might benefit from patches that address the foul territory nets, even though they are already great.
The game of Major League Baseball has been evolving to allow for faster play, in the hopes that it appeals to a larger audience. However MLB The Show 23 is still a step ahead. The new Storylines mode, which allows players to have both the present and the future, is also available. Myriad options and modes allow you to engage with America’s Pastime precisely how you want, and in the process, MLB The Show 23 delivers one of the best baseball games in years.
