MLB The Show 22 – Review In Progress

The MLB lockout continued for weeks, putting spring’s annual crack in the bat at risk. The league and the players finally came to an understanding. While some games were delayed, there will still be a season. The first pitch will be thrown in April 7, which is exactly one week as of the time this article was written. The MLB The Show Series is usually released a week before the MLB season starts. However, this year’s edition hits stores just two days prior to the MLB season begins on April 5. It will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X/S. The first Switch version of MLB The Show was also made available on April 5.

The PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X and Switch editions have just arrived. This story will continue to be updated throughout the day. Sony claims that hitting, pitching and fielding have been improved and audio commentary has come from an entirely different team. You can also participate in an online cooperative game and expect to see improvement in the main avenues of the series, like Franchise, Road to the Show, Diamond Dynasty, and Road to the Show.

My impressions are beginning with the PlayStation 5 edition. A short video will be the first. Shohei Ohtani shares more about his journey to baseball. Then, it was time to fYou’ll be rewarded for being a returning player or a newbie. This is what I received.

After selecting your team, the main menu will open. Next, you can choose to go into a practice match to see which style of play suits you best. To get back to basics and determine which pitching or batting system you like, I suggest this step.

You can play online multiplayer co-op on our main menu. I will use this mode as my first play opportunity. The trailer shows you what this mode can offer.

Five missions are required to enter Diamond Dynasty. The game will give you a default crew to choose from. Here’s mine:

You will be facing the New York Yankees at the bottom of the 9th. The runners are on the second and first bases. To win the game, I was able to get the first pitch across the right field wall. As a reward, I was given two cards: Vinny Castilla (72), and Vinny Casilla (72).

The game comes with a 4-day preorder, which means that I could find my teammate quickly for my first collaborative game. Our lineup was vastly different. Both players choose a couple of cards to use in the game before it starts. Fernado Tatis Jr. and Rickey Lashley, Joe Mauer were among the cards that our opponents had to open. Giancarlo Stanton and even more power from their line-up.

Matchmaking works quickly. It put me in a team with my friend and I had to search for opponents.  You and your fellow 2v2 player alternate in bats. When someone scores, the baserunner becomes the player who is not at bat. The fielding is done by one pitcher who pitches the whole inning and also manages the pitcher and catcher. They are responsible for most steals and bunts. All other players are allowed to field. The pause menu can be used by any player to activate the bullpen. If you are fielding, your view is behind the pitcher until the ball is put in play – allowing for you to get a good look at the pitch locations (you just don’t see your teammate’s meters).

Although there was some latency, it was generally smooth. While we managed 12 hits, they had five. However, two of those five runs were home runs. In our nine-inning match, we left the bases empty twice. A groundball hit in the middle of a shift ended one scoring opportunity. It was scored 2-0. It was a hard fought battle but the final score was 2-0.

While the gameplay was very smooth and pleasant, there wasn’t much I noticed that was different than last year. It’s still an amazing game. The fielding animations were perfect, the player speeds were just right on the bases, and the pitching/batting match was thrilling as ever. You can check the PCI of your fellow teammate and see how close they are to winning one.

For a couple of games I will continue to use cooperative play and I will update if there is anything to report. The next update will include pack opening if not.
