Microsoft Flight Simulator Adds New Plane To Local Legend Series

Microsoft Flight Simulator released another plane as part of the Local Legends Series in conjunction with World Update XII New Zealand: The DHC-4 Caribou.

De Havilland Canada’s eighth aircraft in the Series is the DHC-4 Caribou. It is a twin engine, short-takeoff and landing (STOL), cargo aircraft that was originally intended to be a military troop carrier and cargo ship. Conceptually, the Caribou is a modified version of the DHC-2 Beaver (smaller) and DHC-3 Otter (larger), which has a higher cargo carrying capacity.

On July 30, 1958, the Caribou flew its first flight. In 1961 it was put into regular service. De Havilland made a total number of 307 Caribou airplanes. Most went into military service and others were assigned to civil missions. 32 countries’ militaries flew the Caribou, including that of the United States. The plane was first designated the CV-2, then the C-7. The United States Army (and the United States Air Force) operated a total 159 of these aircraft. Australia, India and Spain also used this airframe up to 2009.

Crewed by two pilots the DHC-4 can hold 32 troops, their gear, and 8,000 pounds of cargo, or some combination thereof. Caribou is distinctively utilitarian with its narrow fuselage, rear cargo ramp, and raised tail section that allow for quick loading and discharging of personnel and equipment.

The aircraft can execute paratroops and equipment drops in flight. It is a cruciform-shaped design with a large vertical stabilizer, rudder, and an aft control for low speed yaw authority. The undercarriage has a retractable tricycle with long landing gear legs to make it suitable for remote and rustic areas. It has a high-aspect ratio main wing mounted forward on the fuselage.

It has an inverted gull shape and supports the two radial engines with nacelles. These also act as mountings for main landing gear. Finally, the aircraft is powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2000 Twin Wasp 14-cylinder radial piston engines that each deliver 1,450 horsepower and turn a 3-blade Hamilton Standard constant-speed, reversible-pitch propeller.

The Caribou has served in numerous combat zones. Through the years it was also used to provide humanitarian assistance in a number of countries, including Vietnam and Vanuatu. The Caribou was able to take off and land on very short runways with as little as 1,000 feet ground roll, earning it a legendary reputation in these tough operating environments.

DHC-4 has an impressive range of 1,300 mile, can climb at 1,355 foot per minute and has a ceiling service height of 24,800 feet above the sea level. It can cruise at 182 MPH, has a top speed at 215 MPH, and stalls with 68 MPH.

The DHC-4 Caribou by de Havilland Canada is a beast of an aircraft that is a true aviator’s machine. It is capable of flying into and out almost all airstrips and can respond confidently and to any pilot input.

Today’s available in Microsoft Flight SimulatorMarketplace, $14.99. The DHC-4 Caribou includes seven liveries
