Mario Party Superstars Review – Reliable Party Tricks

Party are great ways to make new friends, expand your horizons and create fun memories. But the best parties are those that involve reminiscing about old acquaintances. Mario Party Superstars takes advantage of this notion by removing new content in favor of a compilation featuring classic boards and minigames. It is an enjoyable celebration of the franchise, which anyone can appreciate regardless of level.

Mario Party Superstars is a similar game to all other Mario Party games. Each player takes turns rolling dice in order to move along dynamic gameboards, with the ultimate goal being the highest number of stars. To earn more coins, take part in the four-player minigame at the end of every turn. Because of the simplicity and control across all aspects, Mario Party has a broad appeal. While I enjoyed 2018’s Super Mario Party, I’m glad Mario Party Superstars allows for Pro Controller support and doesn’t require the use of the cramped single Joy-Con.

Superstars is a tribute to the series’ past, which is reflected in its minigames and gameboards. You can also adjust how long the game will last and choose which minigames to play during your session. I’m glad Superstars gives me the option to turn off the pesky end-of-game bonus stars or choose to only play games based on skill. Preset options are available. There are also preset options that allow you to choose not to play certain games or to pick simple minigames suitable for everyone.

After you have completed the board game, you will be able to choose from five stages that are iconic of Nintendo 64, each with their own music and graphics. Revisiting Peach’s Birthday Cake from the first title is awesome, and I love Woody Woods from Mario Party 3. The low amount of boards disappointed me. These levels are iconic, but I would have loved to see more than five, especially considering they’re all remakes of pre-existing stages.

Mario Party’s meat is its minigames. Thankfully, Superstars has 100 of its most popular, bite-sized contests from past titles to make up the shortfall. Players can compete through a variety of minigames that are both skill-based as well as chance-driven. I still adore personal favorites like Face-Lift, Paint Misbehavin’, and Motor Rooter. Mario Party Superstars has a unique minigame collection that includes games from almost every Mario Party era. Many of these are the very best of their respective games.

Superstars brought back many of my favorite video games. However, I’m perplexed by the revival of the infamous Tug o’ War game, which resulted in broken controllers and blistered hands on N64 thanks to its stick-rotation controls. This version has a warning to avoid injury by not using your palm, but even ignoring the renewed potential for blistered hands, bringing this minigame back seems like a dangerous choice given that the Switch’s analog sticks are notorious for drifting after even regular use. Only two of the minigames from our 100-strong collection rely upon quick stick rotations.

Mario Party is often associated with the game board mode. However, the Mt. can be used to experience minigames by itself. Minigames. You can play any of the games in this collection for free, or compete against established teams in 3v1 and 2v2 modes. You can have your own space with the puzzle minigames and excellent sports. There are options to extend the time of games like hockey or volleyball.

You can also play online against other players and take part in the contest. Online-specific mode can be used to determine who has the best Survival record, or to participate in Daily Challenges which give you three minigames to play. Daily Challenges are fun ways to enjoy a three-pack of activities with similar mechanics – I loved playing the Shoot ‘em Up challenge, which let me compete in three aim-based contests.

Mt. Minigames’ quick-hit nature might make it the best fit for online play, but you can also experience the board game mode online. While random matchmaking is possible, playing with friends makes it more entertaining. It’s a fun game that can be played with close friends. You can even save your progress to friend matches so you can pick up from where you left off. Pre-release server latency seemed minimal in my testing, but it was noticeable more on minigames that were timing-based, such as Hot Jump Rope. However, there is no native voice chat, although you can use reaction stickers to talk with other players.

Mario Party’s interchangeable board and minigames are perfect for this compilation format. Mario Party Superstars successfully combines the best elements of Mario Party while offering improved online capabilities and options that allow you to play as you wish. Despite its lacking selection of game boards, Mario Party Superstars is a blast regardless of how many parties you’ve attended in the past.
