Magic: The Gathering Turns To A Life Of Crime In Streets Of New Capenna, Coming Later This Month

The newest Magic: The Gathering set brings Planeswalkers to a whole new plane and the bustling city of angels and demons called New Capenna. Five families control the city’s economy, with one demon each. The streets of New Capenna have the feel of the golden age of the roaring 20s. There is a criminal element that seeks to control a mysterious magic substance called Halo.

The tale, which can be read full-text on Magic: The Gathering, revolves around Elspeth, a Planeswalker who is sent to New Capenna by AjaniGoldmane in order to determine if it is from here. She is intrigued by why demons are still in New Capenna, even though angels helped to build it. While attempting to solve this quandary, she meets Giada, a teen who has some sort of connection to the Halo substance every crime family wants to get a hold of.

Vivien Ried (the green-centered Planeswalker) is also present on the plane. He wields a strong weapon called the Ark Bow and Ob Nixilis, a demon who is escalating tensions between families in New Capenna through his separate stocks of valuable Halo.

Families of New Capenna

Five demon-run crime family families run New Capenna, each playing a different role within the city. The five demon-run crime families each use three Magic colors to create their individual roles in New Capenna. The theme is supported by all five families with a different mechanic.

The Obscura – White/Blue/Black

The Obscura is a faction that was created by Old Capenna wizards. They are fortune-tellers and mystics who manage the information flow in New Capenna.

Mechanic – Connive:Draw one card and then throw away the other. If you discard a non-land card this way, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.

The Maestros – Blue/Black/Red

The former aristocrats of Old Capenna, the Maestros are a family of vampires who deal in professional assassinations. They also collect and curate, acting as archivists for the past of New Capenna, while keeping that same history of the city hidden in the shadows.

Mechanic – Casualty (N): To cast the spell at an additional cost, you can also sacrifice a creature having power N or higher. Copy this spell once you have done so.

The Riveteers – Black/Red/Green

One crime family, the Riveteers, is responsible for much of New Capenna’s manual labor. These people can take down and rebuild New Capenna from scratch. The Riveteers are based on traditions from a workers union and value solidarity, loyalty, strength, and mutual support.

Mechanic – Blitz: [Pay a cost]Cast this spell to reduce its blitz cost. It gains haste, and you can “draw a card when this creature dies.” At the end of each ends step, sacrifice it.

The Cabaretti – Red/Green/White

The Cabaretti are known for their ability to host parties and celebrate. They were originally bards and druids in the days before New Capenna was established. They control the popular culture of the city, from parties to entertainment venues and restaurants, the Cabaretti can and will prop up those they like, and make sure others fall from favor in the public eye.

Mechanic – Alliance:You can take control of any other creature that enters the battlefield. [an effect happens].

The Brokers – Green/White/Blue

Acting as the legal-like element of New Capenna, the Brokers utilize a form of contract protection. The Brokers are an amalgamation of the Old Capenna paladins. They uphold a false veil over New Capenna with a system of rules and order. This facade is in place and the Brokers ensure an unsteady peace within the five family members of the city.

Mechanic – Shield Counters:A creature equipped with a shield-counter on it can be dealt damage or destroyed. Instead, you could remove its defence counter.

Returning mechanics

Hideaway X – Once this permanent is on the battlefield, you will need to look at the top cards in your library and then exile one card face-down. Next, place the remaining cards on the bottom, in random order. You may exile a card if you fulfill the conditions.

Cycling – [Pay a cost and discard this card]Draw a card.

Streets of New Capenna’s release is a little different this time around, for the better in my opinion. The tabletop prerelease will be held on April 22nd, a week prior to the digital release. The new Capenna is available for purchase on Magic: The Gathering Arena or Magic Online starting April 28th, with the paper version following the day on April 29th.
