London cops arrest teen, but won’t confirm it’s the GTA 6 hacker

London Police have taken a teenager into custody on suspicion of hacking offences authorities said on Friday. The 17-year-old suspect was arrested in Oxfordshire, England as part of an ongoing investigation with the government’s National Cyber Crime Unit. Police declined to confirm any other details regarding the arrest and investigation — just that the suspect is in custody.

The circumstances are related to earlier hacker arrests that were connected to an organization believed to have been responsible for breaching Uber and Rockstar Games. This latter led to the release of footage from the development. Grand Theft Auto 6Publication over the weekend

Polygon also reached out the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (Department of Justice) in the wake of the Uber hacking investigation. Uber and Rockstar Games did not respond to our request for comment on Friday morning.

Uber thinks that Lapsus$, an international hacker group, was behind the attack. London police detained seven individuals in connection to that group. One was an Oxfordshire teenager, located about half an hour from London. In April two teenage boys, 16 and 17 years old, were indicted in connection with hacker group. They were released on bail. It is believed that Lapsus$ accessed Microsoft, T-Mobile and Ubisoft systems, as well as Okta, the security company Okta.

The Rockstar Games hacker, after publishing nearly an hour’s worth of footage of the in-development game, claimed responsibility for the Uber breach. The Rockstar Games hacker claimed that he had also obtained the source code. Grand Theft Auto 5And GTA 6As well as the test build for the game in development. Rockstar said Monday that the unusual hack was confirmed, and noted that no disruption would occur to its development. GTA 6.

“We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto,” a studio representative posted to Twitter.
