I Find Your Lack of Voices Disturbing: Adding Dialogue to the new LEGO Star Wars

Summary

  • A collaborative experience that was authentic, hilarious, and cinematic led to this game.

Star Wars movies have the best dialogue ever made, but they are also our most original. LEGO Star WarsIt was absent from games. No “Never tell me the odds,” no “Hello there,” no “I hate sand.” People didn’t mind though, as LEGO games were a different beast back then; a hilarious, miming beast, at that. They became popular and are cherished by a new generation of gamers. When it came to the creation of these games however, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga — available now for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S — we wanted to make a totally new experience, not just a remaster. This gave us the opportunity to include dialogue.

An old Jedi once said, “The ability to speak does not make you intelligent,” but it does allow you to parody classic film moments in ways we haven’t done before. These iconic lines can add authenticity to Star Wars beyond the ability to laugh at people. You can find it here. Those original games are a tough act to follow, but with this being an entirely new experience, hopefully fans will appreciate hearing Anakin’s Palpatine-themed alarm clock yelling “Dew it!”

There are many iconic lines in the movies, so we used as much dialogue from the film as possible for story missions and cutscenes. Although fans may not be aware that cutscenes contain large portions of dialogue that are recorded in order to replicate the movie’s lines down to the frame level, they should feel the authenticity.

It was essential that lines feel integral to the plot, story or character when writing original material. You should direct your characters, laugh with them, or make them feel alive. Han Solo and other characters we are familiar with make it easier to maintain lines in their own voices. However, it’s a little harder for lesser heard characters like Yaddle, for example. Is it possible that she has a Northern English accent. It’s unlikely. Do they speak in the exact same manner as Yoda’s? Well, good question.

Lucasfilm Games’ team was fantastic and always available to help us bring our unique brand of humor into the proceedings. It’s also worth noting that not every character speaks Galactic Basic (English). We’ve got a plethora of alien languages such as Jawaese and Ewokese. There was a point where I’d spent so long writing dialogue in Huttese, that I was answering the phone with “Chuba da naga?” My dedication ran so deep that concerning my family and confusing telemarketers was totally worth it.

Now it was time to build our cast. Voice recording can be a very daunting part of the project. You have to do everything perfectly in the shortest time possible. I was fortunate to have Matt Wood, a human-Star Wars-holocron. Star Wars royalty is this man, and I could listen to his tales for hours. Recording studio time is expensive. In addition to directing many sessions, he also gave his voice to many characters. In fact, Matt wasn’t the only “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” alumni to return to the booth, which as a fan, was very exciting.

I think one of my favorite parts of the game is the Obi-Wan and Anakin fight at the end of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” purely because it’s all performed by James Arnold Taylor and Matt Lanter. That climactic moment is amazing to see all the different characters performing it. Then to top it off, Sam Witwer’s Emperor Palpatine shows up with a fishing rod to fish out what’s left of his apprentice. We really wanted to focus the game on the nine saga films, so having some of the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” cast come in was a great way of showing love to the wider Star Wars universe, and I’m so glad we were able to do it.

We have found an original way to make fun of these movies by incorporating dialogue into our game. However, it is hard for me to take credit even if I am a half-middleichlorian. Everybody has been passionate about making this Star Wars gaming experience the best possible. However, Master Yoda once said “Try not. Do or do not. There is no try,” so it’s up to the fans to decide whether we have done it or not. We should have. I pray that the Force is always with you.
