How to beat Balteus in Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon

BalteusIt is the most important gut check that you will ever do. Fires of Rubicon – Armored Core 6,. To progress past this Chapter One, you’ll need to defeat this boss.

Balteus stands out from all other enemies that you have faced. Balteus can be easily stunned by a hail of missiles and can also melt your AC with its flamethrowers.

Even so, every Armored Core 6 boss can be defeated — with a little practice, a little patience, and an understanding of the right tactics. Balteus is covered in our guide to beating him. It covers the entire boss fight, and also recommends the best build for the battle.

Armored Core 6, Balteus, how to defeat him

Balteus fights in two different phases, each with its own attacks. Balteus is also equipped with a shield. This can be seen by its energetic field. The shield will prevent all your damage as long as it is in place. Your main objective is to keep Balteus under attack to reduce its shield. In the hud, the status of the shield can be determined by the light blue bar at the top.

When the shield is down, the regular stagger bar appears and you can cause damage to Balteus’ AP bar. Balteus is also staggered. This is an effective way to prolong the time the boss goes without protection. After a time, however, the boss will get its shield back.

Balteus first phase

Because the fight is not totally scripted, you can’t simply memorize the order Balteus uses its attacks — although the boss’ first attacks are usually the same ones. You should learn to recognize its key moves and know how to counter them.

Your main concern during the first phase is to survive Balteus’ missile attacks. There isn’t a specific order the boss uses them but it’s easy to identify which one Balteus is preparing to launch. Balteus’s barrages that come from different directions are the most dangerous to avoid.

Two ways are available to dodge them. You can first lure the projectiles upwards, and then dodge the other side. Dodge towards the boss to get away from such a barrage.

These strategies work because the missiles can’t abruptly change their trajectory. So, by moving toward the boss, they can’t follow you. This dodge will be easier to perform if you are in the middle of your boss.

Still, in the first phase, another of Balteus’ attacks you should keep in mind is a single shot target at you. When the boss launches this attack you will be alerted. On the screen, you can see the red square that marks the location of the attack.

This attack causes a lot of stress to your stagger bar, but it’s avoidable. When facing the boss and a sound is heard, you can dodge by looking for the square. You will find that the boss may change positions and you won’t be able to calmly check from which direction the attack is coming. Instead, you can rely on sounds to perform evasive moves.

Balteus, second phase

Balteus will drop to 50% AP and enter the second phase. During the transition, Balteus begins to charge an area-of-effect attack, and you can hear Ayre saying “The waves are intensifying.” Get far from it and prepare for the second phase.

Balteus still uses the same missile attack and the one that locks the targets in this phase. Balteus has a few new flamethrower attacks that will end any run in a hurry if they are used more than one time.

After launching missiles, the first move you can use is an arm-flamethrower swipe. Trying to fly out of its reach is almost impossible if you don’t already have a good distance from the boss. If you are in close range, it is best to keep moving forward and under your arm.

Balteus can perform three successive swipe attacks. One with one arm, and two others with the opposite. Consider this to determine which way you should dodge.

Second, a two arm attack. Balteus will fly towards you with his flamethrower arms open as he prepares to do this move. Although this attack’s reach is enormous, you can easily dodge it by going upwards after Balteus starts to move. The boss will lock the direction of its movement based upon your location, so you can lure it by flying out and avoid the attack.

Balteus will now throw a powerful jet of flames at you when he puts his two arms together. When the boss is about to launch this lock-on attack, the sound alert will be heard and the square of red in front of it.

Balteus is always heading for the earth, making it a simple matter of position to escape the flames. In case you’re far from the boss when it does this attack, your best option is to fly upwards and try to go even farther from it. On the other hand, if you are close to Balteus, then you can just move toward the boss’ direction and pass under it. Once you’ve escaped this attack, there is a window of opportunity for attacking the boss.
