How Saints Row Co-Op Works, How It Affects Single-Player

Cooperative play has been an integral part of Saints Row since its humble origins. The series was able to distinguish itself from open-world games by allowing you to play together and complete missions.

“We had done multiplayer in Saints Row 1, and we did multiplayer in Saints Row 2 as well, and that was, almost like the tiniest kernel of what GTA Online came to be – they just knocked it out of the park with anything that we attempted back then, of course,” chief creative officer at Volition Jim Boone says. The big idea we had was: “Can you picture playing this game together, throughout the whole campaign?” Each and every bit. This was no easy feat. We learned these lessons from Saints Row 1 and were constantly asking ourselves, “How do we invent?” And how can we grow?

You can join a two-player online drop-in/drop out co-op in the 2022 reboot Saints Row. As you tour Santo Ileso, Each co-op participant will look exactly as you want them to when you sign up for a session. You can play co-op without being tied to one another. However, if one of you enters a mission the other will warp to that player and take over the responsibility.

Progress is determined per player when a mission begins. Volition doesn’t end there. Collectibles and customization as well as vehicles, weapons, and other items are tracked back to the single-player save. Any mission progress you make in the co-op session is brought back into your single-player save. For example, if you’re in the early-game missions and you join a co-op partner who is deeper in the story, you won’t have to replay any missions you play to completion in the session. Boone says that the game will recall that you played this mission in late-game once you’ve worked your way through it naturally, so you won’t be asked to replay it again.

On top of standard play, Volition tells us you’re able to prank your partner. We don’t yet know what that means, but the development team is excited about the feature. “It’s something totally different that we’ve never done before that players are going to absolutely love,” says creative director Brian Traficante. When they meet, they have access to the pranking systems, so you’re free to let your imagination take flight with, “What would your co-op players do to get pranked?”

Although we don’t know the exact nature of the pranking system, we are eager to learn more about Saints Row co-op’s as the release date for the game approaches on February 25, 2015. You can find more information about Saints Row at our special coverage hub located below.
