House of the Dragon: All dragons and dragonriders

House of the DragonIn its first season, Laena spent more time on politics than she did dragon-riding. Episode 7 saw the House Targaryen dragons take center stage. Laena’s death meant that Vhagar, Vhagar’s dragon, was no longer able to be ridden. This was a perfect opportunity for Vhagar, the oldest dragon still in Westeros, to find a new rider.

Now that Vhagar has a new rider, it’s worth taking a second to account for each of the dragons that House of the Dragon has set up so far, whose side they’re on, and who their rider is.

Riders: Laena (deceased), Aemond Targyen

The oldest and biggest of the Targaryen dragons in Westeros, and the only living remnant of Aegon’s conquest, Vhagar was once ridden by Visenya Targaryen when she, her brother, and her sister united the seven kingdoms. Vhagar was then transferred to Baelon Tarrayen before Laena Velaryon, her most recent rider (previously to episode 7), claimed Vhagar. After Laena’s death, the dragon remained riderless for only a short time before being claimed by Aemond Targaryen, whose dragon egg baby gift did not hatch. Despite Vhagar’s age, she remains one of the most fearsome and dangerous dragons in Westeros, and is now ridden by one of the Greens’ most ardent supporters.

Sunfyre

Rider: Aegon Targaryen

A bright-gold dragon with pink-membraned wings, Sunfyre is the dragon of Aegon Targaryen and a swift flier, though far from the biggest of the Targaryens’ remaining dragons.

Dreamfyre

Rider: Helaena Targaryen

Dreamfyre is an older, but slimmer pale-blue Dragon. She is at some point claimed by Helaena Targaryen, though it’s not really clear if this has happened yet as of episode 7.

Syrax

Rider: Rhaenyra Targaryen

Rhaenyra may have been the first to ride Syrax. She was 9 years old when Syrax was claimed by the Princess of Valyrian. Syrax could be twice as big and intimidating as Caraxes. Rhaenyra, however, hasn’t ridden her into battle.

Caraxes

Rider: Daemon Targaryen

Caraxes is one of the largest and most dangerous of all the remaining Targaryen dragons, thanks in part to the fact that it’s seen war most recently. Caraxes has red scales and was ridden by Daemon Targaryen during the Prince’s many battles around the world, most notably in the Stepstones.

Meleys

Rider: Rhaenys Targaryen

Meleys, with her pink wings membrane and red scales, is often called the Red Queen. Meleys, although she is an older dragon, was among the Westerosi’s fastest and most mobile of all dragons. She is still fearsome even though she’s old.

Vermax

Image:

Rider: Jacaerys Velaryon

Vermax was born from an egg given to Jacaerys as an infant. This stunt was partially intended to demonstrate his Targaryen status. The dragon is still quite small because of that. House of the DragonJace is the one who picks it up

Arrax

Rider: Lucerys Velaryon

Just like his brother’s dragon, Luke’s was hatched from an egg he was given at birth. The result is that although the dragon may be small right now, it will continue to grow in size over time.
