Honkai: Star Rail’s trash cans get some of Hoyoverse’s best writing

As the adage goes: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” It’s a saying that the developers at Hoyoverse seemingly took to heart when creating Honkai: Star Rail. You can have a lot of fun rummaging around the trashcans in Belobog. It won’t give you any fancy items, but you will be rewarded with some of the funniest writing in the game.

Honkai: Star RailThe creators behind Genshin Impact. Although the gameplay varies, Genshin by introducing turn-based combat and more linear exploration, the writers have maintained a sense of whimsy with the game’s dialogue. It’s evident in many ways in the game. From the silly group messages to the hidden Rick Rolls. The way the players dig in the garbage is my favorite illustration of how many liberties the writers are willing to take with their narration.

In the Russian-inspired city Belobog the Trailblazer has the ability to interact with several garbage cans. The garbage glitters, which suggests that we can interact with it or that there’s an item hidden in it. However, if you interact with it, the game doesn’t reward you with an item (immediately) and instead responds with an odd narration sequence.

I click once, “A trash can, not remarkable in any way.”

However, the shimmer does not disappear so I clicked again.

“You’ve been staring at it for a while, but it’s just an ordinary trash can.”

March 7th responds this time, “Ugh… What do you want to do?”

The following narrative unfolds as I click repeatedly:

“You try to hold back the urge to open it. You continue to stare at the garbage cans and they appear to be turning before your eyes. Edges are not rusty anymore and dents have been smoothed out. Under the lid, a soft golden glow is seen. The trash cans appear to be treasure chests for a brief moment. … And it’s happening again. You take a depth breath and open the lid: It’s empty… Wait! Reaching deeper, you reach into the garbage can. There’s a piece of iron scrap on the bottom. It’s a reward for your hard work! Your hard work paid off! You look back at your companions and see their complicated expressions.”

In those moments, I’m solely transfixed on the trash can and its untold secrets. The responses from my teammates in the game interrupt my pride. March 7th says, “…You don’t need to explain. I get it. That urge is too great for you to resist.” Dan Heng says, “There is no turning back once you’ve walked down this path.” And with that, the sequence completes and the player is rewarded with a profile icon that’s just a trash can.

It’s my favorite garbage-can interaction, although there are others. There are so many that it is possible to go can-to-can and find notes written by someone who goes by the name Garbage King and track their movements throughout the city.

I like the garbage cans, but you could do anything in the city. You can, for example, spend 10 minutes in your room and write a negative review about the family-owned, quaint hotel that you stayed at, or climb into your closet to roleplay an evil scenario, where hotel housekeepers come to hunt you. The Hoyoverse writers truly aren’t taking themselves The same goes for the other way around. seriously — and we’re all having fun because of it.
