God of War Ragnarök Nornir Chests locations and puzzle solutions guide

God of War Ragnarök brings back the tantalizing yet infuriating Nornir Chest puzzles, which will allow you to increase your health and Rage meters.

To unlock these chests, you’ll need to interact with three objects — be it a series of bells, totems, or braziers — in the chest’s relative vicinity. By solving the puzzle, you’ll be able to claim your treasure and improve Kratos’ chances of survival.

Nornir Chests can reward one of two items: Idunn Apples (which increase your health meter) or Horns of Blood Mead (which increase your rage meter). The game alternates which one it gives you based on the previous Nornir Chest you opened. So even if you get the Nornir Chests in a different order than we display below, you’ll never get two Idunn Apples back to back. Each time your meters go up, you’ll need more of the resource for the next upgrade. So the first time you’ll only need one of each, but then you’ll need two, three, and so on to upgrade your health and rage further.

In this guide, we’ll show you where to find every Nornir Chest in God of War Ragnarök and how to solve the associated puzzles, plus learn some general tips for solving Nornir Chest puzzles across the nine realms.

Note: This guide will show you all the Nornir Chests you can get during your first visits to Svartalfheim and Alfheim. As you might expect, you’ll be back to both of these locations later in the game and will be able to access previously inaccessible areas with new equipment. If you reach the end of one of the sections in this guide and still notice you’re missing a Nornir Chest or two, it means you simply can’t unlock it yet. We’ll update this guide to include information about the rest of the game’s Nornir Chests by the time you can reach them.

God of War Ragnarok’s different types of Nornir Chests

God of War Ragnarök Five types of Nornir Chests are available. You’ll need to interact with three items in the environment for each, but the type of item varies with the different types of chests. Below we’ve listed out some tips for taking on these Nornir Chests based on their type.

Totem Nornir Chests

Totem Chests offer the most straightforward indian shaming. God of War Ragnarök. You can find the Nornir Chest by simply looking around for other nearby Totems. These Totems are usually very close to you.

We suggest that you avoid looking behind geysers and waterfalls, as they can be frozen with an axe. Santa Monica Studio is fond of hiding these Totems behind objects.

Switch Nornir Chests

Switch Nornir Chests require little to no memorization and are second-easiest to handle. Take a look at the Nornir chest and recall all Rune symbols. To make sure you don’t forget, the PS5 can take quick snapshots and be pulled up using the screenshot tool.

With your knowledge you can search for giant switches, which the game tends to conceal behind other things. You can spin them until one rune is recognized, and then you can move on to another. If this doesn’t end up opening the chest, consider checking the runes again to make sure you didn’t mistake an NFor an e-commerce site, rune nOr something similar.

Bell Nornir Chests

Bell Nornir Chests, because of the large bells, are very easy to find and simple. However, they can definitely cause you some trouble if you don’t activate them in the right order. The three bells that make up each Nornir Chest ring for different amounts of time. It is almost impossible to not ring all three. First, you need to listen to the sounds for each bell and then, ring them in the order they are longest to the shortest.

In this guide, we’ve tried to organize the Bells in the order we think you should hit them.

Brazier Nornir Chests

Brazier Nornir Chosens are brand new RagnarökThe Blades of Chaos can activate this ability. The idea here is that you use the Blades’ heavy ranged attack to set the torch aflame. This type of Nornir Chest has two secrets.

Water will extinguish all lit braziers. There are certain puzzles where you’ll need to freeze water and keep it frozen in order to stop it from putting out your hard work. For puzzles like these, we will mention which order you should light the braziers.

This Nornir Chest type is the most painful. You have to light faraway braziers. Eventually you’ll gain access to hex arrows, which let you paint a sigil on a wall that you can then detonate with your Blades of Chaos. Unfortunately, the Blades are chained to your wrist and thus can’t extend very far. You’ll need to chain these hex sigils (you can place up to three) between a point you can hit with your Blades of Chaos and the Brazier, which can be pretty finicky.

Sigils glow and rotate quickly if they’re overlapping, which is a good way to tell if you’ve lined them up properly or not. You can also make hex sigils bigger by shooting multiple arrows at them — up to two extra times, drastically increasing the base size. You can make the hex bigger, but this will also cause the sigils to destabilize a little, and they will explode after some time. You will need to use them quickly and efficiently. Before you start firing, have a plan.

If you’re really struggling with these, consider upgrading Atreus’ quiver to hold four arrows instead of three as early as possible.

Regenerating Totems Nornir Chests

Another new kind of Nornir Chest, these Totems regenerate too quickly for you to destroy all three — at least when you first start out. You’ll need a different kind of tool to interact with these Nornir Chests, which you won’t get until later in the game. You will see these chests throughout the game, but they are not available until later in Alfheim and Svartalfheim.

We’ll update this section with a spoiler marker and more details before you’ll get far enough to need our help.

Svartalfheim

Svartalfheim is the first area where you’ll really be able to collect and explore things in God of War RagnarökThis realm is the best place to increase your max health, rage and combo with Nornir chests. There are 10 in this realm, and you’ll be able to get six your first time through.

To obtain the first Totem walk in the opposite direction to the Nornir Chest. Freeze the geyser next to the one you previously froze (on your left, if you’re facing the river) and you’ll reveal a grapple point in the cliff. Turn to your right and climb up. Sitting next to a large tree, you’ll see the first totem. Use your ax to break it.

Totems 2 and 3.

Once you have broken the first totem, go back to the Nornir Chest to face it. On your right, on the nearby cliff, you’ll see the second totem. You can break it.

Further away and on your left, on the island directly behind the Nornir Chest, you’ll see the third totem. Open the Nornir chest by breaking it.

To find the correct flag switch, turn to your right at the Nornir Chest. Then walk towards the large cog that is buried beneath the ground. Freeze the geyser and you’ll see the switch. For the switch to work, grab your Leviathan Axe. To check the rune, freeze the water once more. Keep going until you get the rune.

After the cog, turn left. You’ll come across a large pit — which you likely cleared of enemies when you first landed here — but don’t jump down. Instead, look at the cliff on your left and you’ll see another switch. You’ll see the B-rune if you hit it.

Switch 3.

Continue to Nornir Chest, and then take the right-hand path. You will need to climb up the side rock. To face the most massive part of the volcanic rock, walk in front and then turn to the other direction. You’ll see a switch sitting up there, clear as day. It will take you until the N rune is reached.

You can break the totem by turning around, heading toward the water and staying in between the two landing zones. You’ll see a geyser sitting behind a crane. You can find the totem by freezing the geyser and using an ax. Or, you can just trust us and throw your ax through the water blindly. You won’t get in trouble.)

Totem 2

It can sometimes be difficult to find the second totem. If you turn right from the Nornir Chest and freeze the geyser near the dragon statue, you’ll see the totem behind a metal grate, but you won’t be able to break it. Turn around to the other side of the statue and you will see the tail. The totem should be visible sticking out from the grass just right of its tail. Use your ax to destroy it.

Totem 3

The Watchtower is the island that divides Land from Bounty. Then, instead of taking the Watchtower path from Sindri’s shop, go up the hill and head to Radsvinn’s Rig. To the left of the rig, overlooking Lyngbakr Island, you’ll find a brazier Nornir Chest.

Brazier 1

Continue walking behind the Mining Rig, then turn left onto the back portion of the lower deck. You’ll see some barrels blocking a hole in the wall. Use Atreus’ sonic arrows to create a hole and reveal the second brazier. It is now lit.

Brazier 3

To reach the upper deck, go to the right from the back deck. Look over to the right, by the cliff, and you’ll see a brazier stuck behind a metal fence. You can move to your left in order to see the barrel inside the grate. Use your ax for lightening the brazier to unlock the chest.

Alberich Island Nornir Chest

At the very north of the Bay of Bounty you’ll come across a small area called Alberich Island. There won’t be much to do here at all until later in the game, but you can get the bell Nornir Chest immediately. You’ll find it just to your right when you land on the beach.

Bell 1

The first bell is also the longest ringing bell, and it’s located immediately to your right from the Nornir Chest. You can hit it.

Bell 2

Do a 180º turn from the Nornir Chest and look for the crane. Your second bell will be hanging from the crane. Use Atreus’ sonic arrows to cripple the crane and bring the bell down to a level where you can hit it. You should ring this bell after the first.

Bell 3

It is also the loudest and least annoying bell. To your right of the crane, look towards the back area across from the landing spot. You can use your ax and hit the paddle switch in the left side two more times. The bell will then go off to wherever you want it to. You can unlock the chest by quickly remembering the ax, and hitting the bell three times.

Jarnsmida Pitmines Nornir Chest

Follow the path into the Jarnsmida Pitmines and you’ll eventually walk face-first into a Nornir Chest — the game is trying to teach you the brazier mechanic you already learned at the Rig. Either you walk right to the chest, or open the chest by using the three braziers. Let’s do the latter.

Brazier 1

You will find the Nornir Chest to your left. It should be lit and then you can move on.

Brazier 2

You can ignore the Brazier under the water to your left by dropping down towards the Nornir Chest. To cross the river, turn left and then use the grapple to go to the opposite side. To find the second fire place, look up at the cliff. Light it with your Blades of Chaos.

Brazier 3

Return to your Brazier and grab the Grapple. It’s sitting under the water wheel, which is constantly pouring water. The Brazier can then be lit by your Leviathan Axe. Once all three Braziers are lit, the three Seals will break and you’ll be able to safely recall your ax and claim your loot.

Alfheim

Alfheim is the second major location you’ll visit in God of War Ragnarök. It has seven total Nornir Chests, but you’ll only be able to open four of them on your first visit. You will run into a fifth, but you won’t be able to open it just yet.

Strond Nornir Chest

Once you have entered Alfheim by the mystic portal, follow the route up to the Temple of Light. Once you have reached a wall that you are able to squeeze through, take it and immediately turn right and jump off of the ledge.

You’ll land right in front of a Nornir Chest. For this brazier chest to be opened, you will need to light the three adjacent braziers.

Brazier 1

The first brazier is immediately behind you if you’re looking at the Nornir Chest. Turn around and you’ll see a brazier hidden in the rocks. To light the brazier, use your Blades of Chaos

Brazier 2

Now turn to face the Nornir Chest, but walk straight ahead until you reach it. Turn left, and look to the right. You’ll see a brazier sitting there waiting for you to light it. You must attach the brazier.

Brazier 3

You can see the third brazier if you turn your head up. It is quite some distance above the first one. If you are able to use Hex Arrows, it can be lit from this location. But if this is your first visit to Alfheim, you’ll need to go around the long way.

Return to where you started before reaching the Nornir Chest. Now, head back to your original path and continue forward to reach the Temple of Light. If you reach an elevated platform marked with a circle, take the left path and not the forward. Here, you’ll be able to get close enough to the brazier to light it, which will allow you to access to the nearby Nornir Chest.

The Temple of Light Nornir Chest

This is another of the game’s bell chests. You’ll need to hit all three so they ring simultaneously.

Bell 1

You should first run to your right, and then break off the sonicore from the first bell. This is found in the alcove beside the purple crystal. Once that’s done, return to the Nornir Chest.

Standing in front of the chest and aiming your ax at he purple crystal, you will ring the first bell.

Bells 2 and 3.

While stepping towards your left, quickly recall the ax. You’ll see the second bell on the nearby balcony to your left. You can throw your ax at the second bell.

You should quickly recall the second bell’s ax and hit the bell immediately next to it. If you get all three fast enough, you’ll be able to open the Nornir Chest.

The Below Nornir Chosen

A map of Alfheim in God of War Ragnarok

Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon

In The Below area, you’ll come across a hallway with a Bell in it early on, and see the Nornir Chest on the other side. Remember that it’s there and proceed along the main path instead. After you have reached the grapple points, grab a few rocks and walk to the right. Here you’ll find the Nornir Chest, a Bell, and the gate leading to the first Bell you saw.

As we mentioned, this is a bell Nornir Chest, and you’re going to need to do a little bit of prep work for this one. Before you do anything, turn around and unlock the gate that’s right next to the Nornir Chest. You’ll save some time.

Bell 1

Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon

You can leave the Nornir Chest by climbing back to the grapple points. After you have removed the dark elf corruption from your body, you can climb up the main path to reach a higher elevation. When you land, look in the window ahead of you and you’ll see the first and furthest bell. Look to your left and drop down. This is the place to open before anything else.

When you have cleared your path, ring first bell. Recall your ax and then run madly back to Nornir Chest. Follow the path on the right.

Bell 2

Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon

You will need to climb down the steepest cliffs possible and then ring the second bell located next to the Nornir Chest.

Bell 3

Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon

When you hear the second bell sound, grab your ax. Now look in the tunnel you have just opened. You can throw your axe at the third bell that is perched on red rocks.

If you do all of this quickly enough, you’ll be able to open the chest and claim your loot.

The Barrens Nornir Chest

In The Barrens, make your way to the island that’s between the giant skeleton in the upper-right and the small elf temple in the upper-left. At the front of this building, you’ll see the Nornir Chest up on a cliff ledge.

Just to the right of the Nornir Chest is the first brazier. Light it by turning around.

Brazier 2

Turn right from the Nornir Chest and walk to the left. Eventually you’ll come across a brazier sitting on a fallen column. Light it up with your Blades of Chaos.

Brazier 3

From the second brazier, continue to the back. You can line up all the corruption pods of dark elf and then throw your axe through them all at once.

Once you’ve gotten rid off all the corruption, head back towards the entrance to see the Nornir Chest. Look up at the roof and you’ll see the third brazier, and a red pot sitting next to it. Direct Atreus or throw the Leviathan Axe at the pot to light the brazier.
