How to get the latest items for Warhammer 40,000 can be tricky, given the game’s huge surge in popularity. But getting vintage 40K products — known as OldHammer to collectors — is even harder with sought-after models and rare books selling for huge mark-ups online. This weekend Games Workshop will reprint the rules of their original game, OldHammer. 40KThe first edition of this book was released in 1987. A news release states that the print-on-demand of new old book will start on Oct. 14, and run through Oct. 23.

First published 1987. Warhammer 40,000 Rogue TraderThe Imperium of Mankind, the fascist theocratic overlords of the Space Marines who are genetically enhanced children soldiers. Also, it introduced the leader of their corpse called Emperor Mankind. At the time, it was a very different story. For once, Chaos wasn’t even mentioned. Primarchs weren’t god-like super soldiers either, but merely renowned leaders drawn up through the ranks from common Space Marines. Aside from those heresies, however, the tone and timber of the text itself feels quite of-the-moment lore-wise thanks to author Rick Priestley’s epic turn of phrase:

The Emperor of Earth, who has sat on his Golden Throne for more than a 100 years now, is still immobile. The gods have made him the master of mankind and the ruler of a thousand worlds with the power of his unstoppable armies. It is an invisible corpse that writes with the power of Dark Age of Technology. He is Carrion, the Imperium’s Lord of Carrion. Every day a 1000 souls are sacrificed to him. Blood is drunk and meat is eaten. Human blood and human flesh — the stuff of which the Imperium is made.

A man is one of untold millions in these times. Living under the bloodiest, cruelest regime is a nightmare. These are the times. It is a universe you can live in today if you dare — for this is a dark and terrible era where you will find little comfort of hope. You must prepare now to join the adventure. You can forget the technology, science and human nature. There is no progress or understanding in the universe. Only an endless cycle of slaughter, carnage, and laughter from thirsty gods.

The universe is big and you won’t be forgotten, no matter what happens.
