Frictional Games Announces Amnesia: The Bunker, A New Sandbox Open-World Horror Game

Frictional Games is the creator of the Amnesia series as well as Soma. Now, they have released Amnesia The Bunker, an open-world sandbox horror game.

In 2023, The Bunker will be available on PlayStation 2 and Xbox 3 consoles as well as PC via Steam or the Epic Games Store. Frictional states that The Bunker provides players with “high levels of freedom and control over gameplay. This allows them to explore the semi-open world in their own way.” Frictional states that the game doesn’t have any pre-planned events which results in tension through an ever-present threat.

According to a press release, “Amnesia: Bunker” will be a horror survival adventure featuring emergent gameplay and sandbox elements. The moment-to-moment decision making of the players will remain in their hands. Players will be equipped with a revolver gun, a loud dynamo flashlight and the ability to walk through a darkened WW1 bunker in the footsteps of a French soldier who is confused by his memory and being hunted down by an alien creature.

“Amnesia, The Bunker” will challenge players’ creativity, bravery, and ability keep cool under pressure in order to quickly solve problems. Each puzzle and task has multiple options. It’s up you to choose your approach.

Frictional says the semi-open world encourages players explore and to experiment to find solutions to terrors. These are the key features of the game, as revealed by Frictional: 

• Choice of player – emergent gameplay in a sandbox horror survival experience
• Unscripted environment – objects, threats, and resources, change in every playthrough
• Fears of adaptive horror – an ever-present gruesome creature that stalks the player.  
• Immersion in tactile sensation – all-new levels of interaction with the world through puzzle-solving and tool handling
• An absorbing, but terrifying story – experience hell on earth in a fictional appalling story
• An atmosphere of tension and intrigue – enhanced lighting effects and carefully designed sound effects for a real horror experience.
