Elvis, Jurassic World Dominion, and every new movie you can watch at home

This week’s slate of new movies to watch at home is led by ElvisBaz Luhrmann’s outrageously extravagant Elvis Presley biopic, titled “The Unexpected Elvis Presley Biopic”. While you’re in the mood for that, why not consider Elvis Presley’s best movies as an actor or other good movies about musicians?

This week, beyond the King, we also get to see the Jurassic World film roar onto Peacock. It is one of our favourite movies and it will be streaming for the first time. Blazing Saddles adaptation (yes, we are also still struggling to believe that’s real), and much more.

Here’s everything new you can watch at home this weekend.

Elvis sings into microphone as fans stretch their arms out toward him

Warner Bros.

Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 musical biopic chronicles the life of American music icon Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) from his childhood singing in a small church choir to his stadium-packing performance as a rock legend. Tom Hanks co-stars as Elvis’ manager, Col. Tom Parker, a controversial and inscrutable foil to Elvis who follows the young legend’s ascent to fame like an ever-present shadow.

From our review:

Butler looks almost as Elvis. He has the perfect drawl, mannerisms, and voice. He doesn’t manage to locate Presley’s depths, or the insane highs of his delusional ego. Luhrmann however, who is just as obsessed as ever with Presley on stage, has a greater interest in Presley as an entertainer than as a psychological subject. Butler is also a star on the stage. He sings some songs himself and mixes his performances with Elvis original recordings from elsewhere.

Jurassic World Dominion

Chris Pratt pets a dinosaur in Jurassic World: Dominion

Universal Pictures

Billed as the “epic conclusion of the Jurassic Era,” and the sixth film overall in the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World DominionFour years have passed since the devastation of Isla nublar. Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), Claire Dearing, and Maisie Lockwood are confronted with the challenge of surviving in an unfamiliar world populated by genetically-resurrected dinosaurs.

Based on our review

Dominion Universal can understand the idea of a scifi dystopia that doubles as a monster movie. Universal also knows something about it. Like a ’50s B-movie, Jurassic World Dominion pauses to pontificate about humankind’s place in the evolutionary chain in between sequences that deliver the teeth-gnashing goods. To reach this vast, beautiful dinosaur park, we may have to endure some pandering nostalgia.

Jane Schoenbrun’s 2021 coming-of-age horror drama tells the story of Casey (Anna Cobb), a teenage girl who becomes immersed in a viral role-playing game. Casey starts to feel strange, sinister things about herself and is forced to face the possibility that all this may be in her head. Think 2018’s Eighth GradeBy way Marble Hornets.

From our review:

It is the worst part of being online and trying to find out your identity. Internet is supposed to be a place where everyone can connect. The strangeness of anonymously sharing information can make it a creative and safe space. Schoenbrun says that individuals can choose what and who they wish to be within the range of shared expression. We’re All Going to the World’s Fair isn’t just a movie about connecting, it’s about becoming. It’s a powerful acknowledgement of how confounding and frightening young adulthood can be. But it’s also a film about hope. There’s a name for the specific kind of alienation and confusion its characters are feeling. Maybe, it suggests, people like Casey will find that name, in spite of the machine’s best efforts.

The animated comedy about martial arts Fury and Paws transplants the broad strokes of Mel Brooks’ satirical Western black comedy Blazing SaddlesThe story of Hank (Michael Cera), a small-sized dog who dreams of being a samurai, takes us from America’s frontier to feudal Japan.

Our review:

It was also a change from cowboys, to samurai.Fury PawsThis movie is far less of an example of a parody in genre because Brooks and the younger filmmakers behind it don’t seem to be particularly concerned about the dynamics of a samurai film. It’s an all-purpose joke, with nods to American films that are not related. West Side StoryStar Wars and Star Trek Do not mistake this for Star Wars. Blazing Saddles. Even older children would be more interested in Brooks’ Spaceballs, a 1987 Star Wars spoof that, while funny, is similarly broad and not especially well-versed in the genre it’s goofing on.
