Elite Dangerous development on PlayStation and Xbox is canceled

The console version is in development Elite DangerousIt has been cancelled, which means players who own Xbox or PlayStation devices won’t be able play the latest expansion. Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. Frontier Developments has made this announcement. After a prolonged effort to stabilize the PC version of the game, Frontier Developments announced this decision on Thursday.

“Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development,” wrote CEO and franchise co-creator David Braben. “We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite DangerousConsole will remain as is, with the critical updates. But we will now be focusing our attention on updates to new content on PC.Odyssey codebase.”

The OdysseyExpanding opened up new game modes for the spacefaring videogame, such as atmospheric flight and new settlements that provide dynamic first-person gameplay. It also dramatically changed the planet generation. The game is now very different from what it was when it first launched in 2014. Add in frame rate and connectivity issues, plus other problems, and it’s been quite a rocky road since Odyssey In the spring 2021, it was launched. Frontier seems to have cut its losses in order to concentrate on the PC platform which boasts the largest player base.

“We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. Although this wasn’t an easy decision, it was one that was prepared for the future. Elite Dangerous in mind,” Braben said. “With regards to what is coming next in Elite Dangerous, we look forward to sharing further news in due course.”

Elite Dangerous While Cross-Platform Games have been around for a while, they are not as widespread in their traditional meaning. Both console and desktop players can access the same universe but they are separated from one another. The game’s storyline, however, and the background simulation that controls its many inhabited planets and warring factions has always been shared between all three platforms. It has made it possible to host massive events, such as Distant Worlds expeditions. There were more than 14,000 participants across the three game versions. It’s unclear how similar events will be impacted going forward.

The news already has impacted Elite groups that are close-knit. Commander Either is the leader of the New Pilots Initiative which assists new players across multiple platforms. In a Discord announcement, Commander Either stated it clearly:

“Clearly this is terrible news,” they said, “for the game community as a whole, and our console brethren in particular. I’m not going to try to put a positive spin on this, many people, myself included, are very angry and frustrated with [Frontier Developments] for this decision.”
