EA announces new Skate will be a free-to-play, live-service game

The creative team behind Electronic Arts’ new Skate — the first new entry in more than a decade — revealed more details about their skateboarding game on Thursday, including its full name: Skate. Just Skate,EA however stylizes the phrase with a period. (“It’s Skate. Period,” the developer said.)

Chris “Cuz” Parry, creative director on SkateThe new game does not include a sequel or remake. SkateNot necessarily something old, but something entirely new. “We’re in it for the long haul,” Parry said, and developer Full Circle will add new gameplay content and gameplay elements to the game based on player feedback.

New SkateIt will be free to play and available on Windows PC, PlayStation and Xbox platforms. Full Circle and EA announced that the game would have full cross-play capabilities and progression. There will be a mobile version. SkateIt is currently in development. The developers did not announce a release window for any version of the game, only committing to “when it’s ready.”

Developers said yes. SkateThe microtransactions that will fund it’s continued development will allow for its cosmetic enhancements, however they won’t be as significant as the ones currently in place. The team said that it’s looking to games like Apex LegendsInspiration for monetization: EA’s.

Fans can sign up to playtest the game for a “pre-pre-pre-alpha” look at the next SkateEA, Full Circle were all announced by EA in June.

A new Skate game was officially confirmed in 2020, after a yearslong campaign in which fans of the franchise flooded EA’s social media channels with the #skate4 hashtag in an attempt to convince the publisher to revive the skateboarding series. EA unveiled the Full Circle team that was creating Skate. Leading Full Circle is Daniel McCulloch, formerly a general manager of Xbox Live at Microsoft, and Parry and Deran Chung as Skate’s “creative leadership.”

Skate was the most popular game of all time Skate 3Publication:. The series was originally developed by EA’s Black Box studio in Vancouver. This team was then merged with EA Canada, and Black Box ended in 2013.
