Dune: Spice Wars Continues A Long-Running Strategy Tradition

Our first glimpse at Dune: Spice Wars was this evening. It clearly looks to continue on the long-standing claim of being a success in strategy gaming.

We hear many place names and characters that are firmly rooted in Dune’s new game. The trailer has a mostly atmospheric feel. The camera zooms in from Arrakis to show a large hand holding an area of the planet. Sand is slipping out its fingers as it does so.

The game’s official site has more detail to offer, promising that Dune: Spice Wars is a real-time strategy game with 4X elements. Shiro Games (the team that developed Northgard survival game) is creating the game.

The new Spice Wars video game lets players control a faction that is fighting for Arakkis. This place contains Spice, which can increase consciousness and enable space travel over vast distances. Although familiar factions such as Harkonnen and Atreides can be taken over by players, it seems that other factions may also be an option. You can also use subterfugees, politics, economic growth and warfare to win. Real-time 4X dynamic means that players can explore, expand and exploit the desert planet while trying to take it over.

To help with further development, Dune: Spice Wars will be available as an early access game. The first opportunity to play the game is in 2022.

Dune has seen a resurgence in recent years thanks to the film’s success, and the first look at the game seems promising.
