Disney Plus is getting an ad-tier — and getting more expensive

At today’s shareholder meeting, Disney announced that ads are coming to Disney Plus.

A version of Disney’s streaming service with ads will become available starting Dec. 8 for $7.99 per month. If you’re scratching your head, doing the math, and wondering why that’s about the same as your current ad-free subscription, that’s because the ad-free tier is going to bump up to $10.99 a month. Disney Plus Basic is the ad version. Disney Plus Premium is the ad free tier. You can still access all Disney Plus titles across both platforms.

It is similar to Hulu (another Disney-owned streaming site), which has both ad-free or ad-based models. Hulu’s price will rise starting Oct. 10th. Basic subscriptions will see a $1 increase from $6.99 – $7.99 and the ad free tier, $12.99 – $14.99. Meanwhile, the Disney Plus Bundle — which currently includes Hulu with ads, Disney Plus with no ads, and ESPN Plus — will increase from $13.99 to $14.99 a month. Premium Hulu will continue to be $19.99 per month, but it includes ads-free Hulu. Disney announced earlier that ESPN Plus pricing will rise by the end the month.

Previously, Disney announced an ad-supported model of Disney Plus would come in late 2022 — though it was said to cost less than the ad-free version. And it’s true; increasing the price of the ad-free version certainly makes the ad-tier cheaper.
