Cover Reveal – Sonic Frontiers
Sonic the Hedgehog fans have seen many changes over the 31-year history. Fans were able to experience the Classic Era’s 2D stage design, while those in the Modern Era got the Adventure and Boost games. And that’s without counting Sonic Boom. With the films setting new box office records, and bringing Sonic the Hedgehog’s beloved blue hedgehog into mainstream consciousness, it is possible that a new era of Sonic the Hedgehog gaming could be in the making. Sega, Sonic Team and Sonic Frontiers could welcome Sonic the Hedgehog fans to the Open-Zone Era.

To cover this issue’s story, I went to Burbank California for Sonic Team’s U.S. headquarters. There, I played hours of Sonic Frontiers. That time was spent exploring Kronos Island and solving puzzles. I also helped friends. I got the chance to play through several newly announced Cyber Space levels. This 16 page cover story features interviews with Sonic’s present and past to find out how they have rebounded from their more difficult years in order to be again considered videogame royalty. You’ll learn more about the history of Sonic, the brand’s recovery efforts after a string of less-than-satisfactory titles, how the movies and TV shows fit into the broader brand picture, and where the Sonic franchise goes from here. This is just the beginning of my hands-on impressions with Sonic Frontiers.
This issue has a lot more to offer. Kimberley Wallace offers a great feature on Open Roads changing direction in its turbulent development cycle. Matt Miller has an early glimpse at Stormgate and Matt Miller takes a look at the RTS developed by talent from Starcraft II. Finally, I dive into the evolution and improvement of Madden NFL 23. Blake Hester was able to go spelunking along with Spelunky founder Derek Yu, and lived the full story. A large previews section is also included, featuring new views of Marvel’s Midnight Suns. MultiVersus. Saints Row. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. Final Fantasy XVI. Redfall. Street Fighter 6. All that, and much more is in this issue. Game Informer.
