Carmen Sandiego’s ’90s CD-ROM games made me realize I was bisexual

You could see long, brown hair in the darkness and a broad-brimmed red cap. Your communications were disrupted by an ominous voice that taunted detectives near you. She kept trying to escape you, making it difficult for you to understand how she managed this feat. She did impossible things while still looking cool and creating terror. When I was a teenager, she stole my heart and many other things.

Carmen Sandiego should, in hindsight have helped me to realize that I was bisexual. She ended up not doing that, because I didn’t even know the term existed until I was a teenager; Alison Bechdel had to provide that awakening with her memoir Fun Home. That and Carmen Sandiego’s not real. She’s a villain from a game franchise.

The greatest thief in ’90s edutainment

A brief rundown for those who never chased her: In most of Carmen Sandiego’s CD-ROM games from the ’90s, she was an unapologetic thief. Many canons confirm that she had previously worked at the Agency to Classify Evildoers. Lynne Thigpen, the ACME chief played in various games and shows, said that Carmen rose up the ranks from detective to head. Carmen was eventually unable to catch crooks and she betrayed ACME. She even called her past there “embarrassing.”

Depending on the game canon, two different ACME agents claimed they had been Carmen’s partner. Chase Devineaux, in the Word And Math Detective Julia Argent, on the other hand, maintained a dry cynicism while games remained untouched by it. Treasures of KnowledgeCarmen was a good example of what game could see. The two had great chemistry together and their interactions reminded us of bitter exes.

One canon kept the chemistry but changed the dynamic: Netflix’s 2019 Carmen Sandiego Carmen became a brave thief when she was shown. VILE criminals gave Carmen their new weapon but Carmen rebelled after realizing that they wanted to see her kill innocent people. To donate money to charities or to restore the items to their rightful owners, she stole from criminals. The Netflix series featured Julia and Chase, whose personalities were drastically altered. Julia’s personality changed from being more passive and more alert to Chase, who became impulsive and determined Javert archetype. Both admitted Carmen was difficult to capture, but they found it alluring.

What is Carmen Sandiego’s secret?

The Netflix series started its pilot by inquiring, “Who is Carmen Sandiego?” Most of her games asked about the “where.” After all, she could navigate to another country and steal a great historical landmark in a matter of minutes. So, who is Carmen Sandiego anyway? What makes her so special? Is there something about her that makes her both attractive and great?

Carmen’s adrenaline junkie tendencies made her attractive; the Netflix adaptation kept this tendency. She taunted the player’s character, dropping hints about her next heist. The crooks would be caught! They were blamed for their incompetence by her.

Even time travel didn’t elude her. The ACME device she stole was called the Chronoskimmer. She ordered her VILE henchmen through time to grab historic objects. Carmen led the group on a time-travelling chase. When caught, she boasted that high-tech prison laser bars couldn’t hold her. The braggadocio was quite admirable.

Clothes also reflected the thief’s confidence. Carmen was known for wearing bright red clothes, which made it difficult to identify her while she stole. It is clear that Carmen was skilled at concealing her identity, and she could even adjust her height by slouching. While her coat helped her stand out in crowds, she also knew when to change to plain clothes and wigs. This look is still stunning thirty years later.

Carmen had a fascination with your character. Because neither ACME or Interpol hire children to bring down international criminals, we played the game as adults. She was so fascinated that we could find her without even breaking a sweat. That was what you could see in. What is the USA?, What is Time? Please see the following: Word DetectiveCarmen has her crooks sent all over the United States by Carmen. It would take you a lot of time to travel from East Coast to West Coast. But not Carmen or the player. Your tail was right at hers, ready for a rumble. You led the Good Guides, beating criminals and throwing handcuffs whenever necessary.

An obsession with a villain

Carmen was a multifaceted appeal to my bisexuality. Carmen met all the requirements for intimidating villains and brought real stakes to a conflict. She had to have a reason for leaving the heroes alive. Carmen’s utterly frightening worst moments were something I loved.

Carmen was an obvious threat. Her best games were full of moral danger. How can you steal the Forum from Romans? This could lead to the fall of the empire faster than in reality. Snatch the lightbulb prototype so Thomas Edison couldn’t benefit from plagiarizing Tesla? You can’t work graveyard shifts, like the doctors who are on call. Carmen had unlimited pickpocketing abilities. She and her accomplices sometimes robbed national monuments.

Word DetectiveCarmen, at her lowest point in villainy. Babble-On Machine is a device that can steal spoken and written words from the brain. That’s already bad enough for those who have communication issues or language barriers. Carmen planned to take language from around the globe. The beam would scramble people’s brains.

I didn’t want to watch, or play. Word DetectiveIt was a scary sight as a youngster. The opening was just too scary. The opening is still terrifying for adults. Carmen’s Babble-On Machine captured longstanding Good Guide Ann Tickwittee. Ann (also known as Agent 12) had previously been beaten up by crooks bigger than herself. Carmen’s game had improved since the time she was captured by the tower and placed in shackles. Rock Solid and several other Good Guides were also present. Carmen exposed the agents to the beam. As you entered the lair, all they could do was to beg in gibberish for assistance. It was rather kinky for a kids’ game.

It took until I was an adult to realize that the game wouldn’t harm you. As you looked for clues, puzzles and keys that would unlock your Good Guides, there were no high stakes. It was easy to take your time and reset without worrying about the consequences. This game however was very influential in how I saw bad villains. The game helped to solidify my view of Carmen. While she was bad, she was still a great character.

Turn off your computer’s screen

It is a shame that it is nigh-on impossible to play a ’90s Carmen game now. It is necessary to understand how to set up an emulator that emulates Windows 2000, to upload files to a site that hosts Carmen Love, and to troubleshoot. I once spent a whole night trying to do that and failed miserably, even with a friend’s guidance. Carmen went missing when our old computer decided to go out of business.

The Carmen Sandiego of my childhood exists in a CD installer that no longer works, a few booklets we kept, and YouTube Let’s Plays. She will not be forgotten, even with all of the nostalgia we share. The awakenings of hindsight, seeing brown hair fly in the wind, will not be lost.
