Calvin & Hobbes creator returns with illustrated book “for adults”

Bill Watterson is the cartoonist most famous for his iconic drawings Calvin and Hobbes Comics have come out of retirement in order to write a new book.

Titled The Mysteries, the official synopsis on the Simon and Schuster website describes the illustrated book as “fable for grown-ups” that takes place in a kingdom where disasters keep happening. One knight returns to his kingdom years after his investigation, while the other is dispatched by the King of the Realm. The MysteriesWatterson and John Kascht form a partnership.

Watterson was a writer and drew. Calvin and HobbesBetween 1985 and 1995. Calvin is a mischievous, precocious boy who lives with Hobbes his pet tiger. Watterson usually avoids the spotlight, refusing autographs and licensing his characters. However, in 2010, Watterson celebrated the 15th year of his death. Last Calvin and Hobbes strip, he spoke to The Plain Dealer about his decision to end the strip, saying, “By the end of ten years, I’d said pretty much everything I had come there to say. It’s always better to leave the party early.”

Watterson has only done some illustrations and comics since then. Calvin and Hobbes ended — most notably a three-day takeover of Stephen Pastis’ Pearls Before Swine in 2014 — The Mysteries This is his first major project since.
