Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode is astonishingly good, free

My holiday vacation was spent playing golf. Modern Warfare 2 – Call of DutySpecifically, the DMZ Version of the popular, free-to-play battle-royale mode Warzone 2.0. It is very much in beta — the enemies seem like they’ve had a brain transplant every four or five days or so, and the dang thing crashes hard every few days, taking all of my hard-won loot with it. DMZ has been delivering white-knuckled thrills for me, at least. After a long day at the word mill here at the good ship Polygon, I can count on season 1’s Al Mazrah map and the many heavily armed factions that populate it for a good time — a great time, actually. And it hasn’t cost me a dime.

DMZ, a multiplayer session-based survival game is available. If that sounds like a niche within a niche, that’s because it is. There is no other game remotely like it. Escape from TarkovThis is a highly technical tactical shotgun that can be used to shoot at targets. Arma 3.Shame. I was told by developers that the project was developed with former Russian special forces personnel. They have never proven these bona fides to me, but if that sounds like a hard sell in the year of our lord 2023, you’re not alone. I just can’t bring myself to boot it up anymore because of… The world needs your gestures His window is open.

A session-based multiplayer survival game is a player-versus-player-versus-enemy-AI playground with a fixed set of really obscure objectives: Visit this realistic landscape filled with enemy soldiers, look out for the highly skilled players lurking in the shadows, open this one weird door to advance your own personal quest lines, and make your way to the exit as discreetly as possible.

Tarkov, advancement in those quest lines opens up new vendors and new opportunities to — you guessed it — do it all over again, but moar harder. You can find out more. DMZ success is unlocking weapons or attachments as per the Call of Duty progression tree. This is the gimmick that comes with both Tarkov And The DMZ means that any item you take into a session can be at risk if it goes down…or if the game crashes. Lose that nice gun and you’re empty-handed for the next challenging run through the gauntlet.

There’s a big difference in complexity, however. Take, for example: TarkovRaytheon would be proud to see how realistic the models are at penetration and ricochet. There are dozens of strange NATO and Warsaw Pact small arms, as well as related furniture like thermal optics, armor-piercing round, grips, etc. Under fire, you can also add a lot of inventory Tetris and an entire location-based medical system. It’s not for everyone.

But DMZ removes those barriers for anyone who isn’t concerned with the muzzle velocity of non-NATO frangible rounds. You’ve got access, more or less, to the full assortment of weapons from the multiplayer modes of the full-fat, full-price Modern Warfare 2 via what’s called an insured slot. If you die and lose that really nice light machine gun that you’ve grown fond of, you can have it back in two hours, thank you very much. While you wait, you can hop back into another session with a piece of “contraband” — a class of weapon that you earn by completing quests, or that you find in-game and bring home with you after a successful session. Are you running out of contraband You get a random loadout — usually an over-under shotgun and a pistol.

Two players wearing for-pay skins fight in a river in Al Mazrah. A helicopter moves in the background as an armored boat draws near. Another player floats overhead on a parachute.

The best way to get around the traffic jam in DMZ is by boat. There’s always at least one helicopter on the map as well, and certain quests will require it.

The DMZ also offers a type of press your luck ethos with armor and health. This armor system lets you take just one bullet to either your chest or to your back, before your health begins to fall. Many loot boxes will contain three- or two-plate ballistic armor carrier. They allow you to carry two or three rounds each before your health is affected. Your plate carrier drops to one after you’re dead. To get another plate carrier, you must grind under fire in-game and at great risk.

It all creates an enviable cycle of rapidly increasing tension. Instead of hiking for several hours north to an airfield à la DayZFighting over an airdrop contested as in PUBGTo prepare for the push, just do a couple of sessions with some friends. The adrenaline pumping after an hour is a good sign. Even better, the loot is there every time you start up the game. My three-plate vest is my best insured gun. I’m able to gear up alone over lunch and go for a session of high intensity with it.

A map showing player quests on the left, the in-game environment in the center, and a legend on the right-hand side.

You will find a wealth of information in the game’s map. Clockwise from the upper left corner you have one of the three blue exfil locations — where a helicopter will land to pull you out of the session. Along the river you can se a rubber boat, and to the east of that boat a hostage rescue mission — which will spawn another exfil location. The player (1) is just northeast of a landmark — the police station — which is filled with cash and potentially self-revive kits. You can see the train which circles the map at the bottom right. The image ends with a shop-cart-shaped station, where you will find high-end contraband and a two-plate carrier. Your personal goals are displayed on the left-hand corner of the screen. YouTube’s tutorial covers all the essentials.

One of the major problems with modern live-service, first-person shooters is time commitment. I don’t need to run a four-hour raid à la Destiny 2Or, you can commit to a continuous battle royale session lasting up to an hour. I can hop in and hop out in 20 minutes, have a great time, and build on that experience the next time I play — it’s just the thing for a sad dad like me trying to get back into good sleep habits in the new year.

Developer Infinity Ward has also been working on some advanced features to the map. Once they have landed, players can immediately see the extraction points. It allows singles, duos or three-person teams, to enter a session and make a plan for exiting at the given location. They then proceed to that spot, ticking their boxes as they travel, and can see extraction points.

You can also find missions in the game. They appeal to different styles of play. Do you want to fight a team of three more heavily armored players in a drag-out match? There’s a mission for that. Do you want to get rid of a few bad dudes? Go do a hostage rescue and they’ll fly a whole fourth chopper in just to get you and the friendly AI character out of the session. It’s the only way to go, if you ask me.

These rules were created to be easy on your time and reward you for playing in smaller groups. All members of the party can make progress toward their personal quests. This means that even if one friend brings home five flash bombs and your other three bring along three, both will get credit for looting eight. More players equals more ability to progress in the metagame.

DMZis dense and thought-provoking, and allows players to work at their own pace. It is possible to make a donation if you are interested. DMZImagine a pizza with a lot of perfectly shaped slices. It’s good. I also mean the whole experience.

The integrated proximity chat is a great option, as it includes voice and text. And text. It’s not nearly as nuanced as the Teamspeak plugins utilized by dedicated military simulation groups like Shack Tactical (a group of which I am a member, for what it’s worth). Camelpoop420 sounds just as loud and shrill when he’s across the street as when he’s right next to you, and the directional audio in these situations is a bit hit-or-miss. However, it does its job. It can be annoying, it can make them panic, and you can even make new friends.

I will never forget when, the day before Christmas Eve, my own team of sad dads rolled up on another team of sad dads at a poorly defended LZ screaming — pleading, more like — with each other not to shoot. “Friendlies! Friendlies!” we panted, not unlike the early days around DayZ’s Chernogorsk, circa 2014. All six of us then climbed into the helicopter and had a great time. The next three teams were waiting to be called. To complete quests you can team up with other people, combining depleted squads or solo teams to create one happy gun-toting family.

Bottom line: DMZ was the most unusual thing Call of Duty has ever done In yearsIt is my pleasure to be here. This game successfully combines the tension and adventure of great roguelikes with open-world exploration, which is what makes it so unique. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain And Hitman 3 so immersive. This allows players to be creative and problem solve while seamlessly integrating all of the modern Call of Duty features that make it an AAA-quality experience. The game does all this while respecting the player’s time and displaying trust.

It is free, did I not?
