Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 lacks option to disable cross-play on Xbox and PC at launch

Modern Warfare 2: Call of Duty is out now, and Xbox and PC players have been disappointed to find that they have no option to disable cross-play in the game’s settings.

Reddit, Reddit and other sites have reported that Xbox and PC users are incapable of using the Internet. Modern Warfare 2’s menus to disable the feature that allows players on different platforms to play together. PlayStation players have the option of turning cross-play off.

Xbox users have an alternative: cross-play can be disabled at system level. But PC players don’t have this option.

The reasons for the option’s disappearance aren’t known. The option was reported to be present on all platforms during the beta testing, which could indicate that it is a bug.

Cross-play is not an option for some players. This ensures fair play and a competitive environment. There is much debate about which player has the advantage. PC gamers, who have faster keyboards and mouse controls, and possibly higher frame rates. Console players on the other hand, play with aim assist and controllers. But all agree that it’s not an exactly like-for-like comparison. For the record developer Infinity Ward stated that controller users have an edge over mouse-and-keyboard users. However, for most players controller is statistically better.

A possible solution to this problem is input-based matching, which matches players using the exact same control methods. Infinity Ward implemented this in 2019’s Modern Warfare, but by most accounts it didn’t work that well — perhaps due to the conflicting demands of skill-based matchmaking and the general availability of players.
