Best RPG Of 2021: Tales of Arise

Each series with a long history has turning points. These are times when you need to be reenergized and think ahead. Tales of Arise was Bandai Namco’s opportunity to enact meaningful change and enter a new console generation soaring. The developers didn’t let the opportunity pass by, rising to the challenge and breaking franchise sales records in the process. Tales of Arise tried new things and took risks. The result was a wonderful RPG that features charming characters, exciting battles, and rewards for exploration.

In its 26-year run, the Tales series has always had a passionate fanbase, but Tales of Arise helped expand the franchise’s reach and elevate its established formula to make it one of the best entries in years. While retaining the series’ essence, Bandai Namco brought in a new visual style, more strategic combat, and a mature story about warring nations. This series was especially notable for its approach to socio-political topics like racism, authoritarianism and mental illness. 

Protagonists Alphen and Shionne helped develop the narrative’s great impact. As polar opposites, the two challenged each other to improve and grow through their differing perspectives and views on social and political issues. The two’s undeniable chemistry and delightful banter also added some levity to the sometimes bleak journey, and watching how the two come together to change things for the better is a highlight.

But Arise wouldn’t pack the same punch without its engaging battle system. The series’ fast-paced, combo-driven action is still alive and well, but the additional depth and variety make all the difference. The series’ flashy, fun boost attacks (deadly single moves) and boost strike (team finishers), keep it exciting and entertaining, and aerial attacks and last second dodges offer valuable bonuses such as temporary damage increases and bonus attacks. But the best thing is that every member of your party controls their character differently. They also have unique perks. This makes it easy to switch between characters when you feel like a change and allows you to easily find your preferred one. Boss fights are memorable because you have to be attentive and take on larger than-life challenges. You can unlock and boost your stats or skills using the progression system. It makes everything feel fresh and new. 

Tales of Arise includes everything you need to run a complete RPG. There are many exciting activities and side quests to be done in this world. Cooking and fishing are fun ways to pass the time, but exploring the land and finding materials for upgrades or even an optional boss means there’s always something to see and discover.
