The Inspiration Behind Our Work

Serenity Forge’s core mission is to create meaningful, emotionally-charged games that will challenge your thinking. We’re based in Boulder, Colorado, which is surrounded by beautiful mountains and vast prairies. We were inspired over the years by Colorado’s culture and its environmental consciousness, along with the beauty of the landscape. We wondered, “what would our corner of the world look like if it were the locus of some world-altering event?” That’s how Homestead ArcanaBorn.

Uncovering History

The following are some of the ways to get in touch with us Homestead ArcanaYou find yourself in an apocalyptic universe. Careless magic use over millennia has submerged the earth in toxic mist. It is nearly impossible to live in the clouds. People and creatures who survived the fog became mysterious, warped and dangerous. Most of the world’s population has become reserved and fearful due to this catastrophe. However, you are not one of them. You set out to restore the land using spellcraft, intelligence, and grit. Through the course of the game, you discover the secret behind the Miasma, tend to your plants and homestead to power up your spells, and use nature’s magic to restore the land. The submerged ruins are explored and you journey to find the truth.

Narrative Adventures

World of Homestead ArcanaWe focused on environmental storytelling and atmospheric design. Inspirations included WPA posters, woodblock prints, and Miyazaki’s films. Princess MononokeParticularly the contrast of lush/beautiful foreign wastes and overgrown nature in Nausicaa of the Valley of the WindThe dangerous nature and the unforgivingness of Made in Abyss… and the weird, bubbling supernatural phenomena that are hard to pin down in books/films such as Annihilation.

In a similar way to the games, we wanted to immerse players in constructing their own homes. Portia: My time at PortiaYou can also find out more about Stardew ValleyBut put them into a mysterious and isolating world, similar to that of games like Shadow of the Colossus.

We are also very character-centric. We start our stories with people’s emotions and then we try to understand how they might feel when faced with strange challenges. The game is based on the emotions of people in strange situations. We try to understand how they would react when faced with super-natural challenges. Homestead ArcanaYou begin by visiting your abandoned crumbling farm, with Huckleberry, your trusted familiar (whom you can even pet!Yuri Lowenthal is the voice of Huckleberry. With his guidance, you begin to adapt and settle in your new life. However, you slowly find that Huckleberry might be hiding a lot more than he makes seen, and that maybe the two of you aren’t actually alone here after all.

The genres of farming and survival are interesting in themselves, as they offer a lot of opportunities for roleplaying, immersion and player choices. In these kinds of games, players want to explore and poke at the boundaries of the world, which is exactly the mindset we’re seeking to capture. This leads players to discover magical items that have been hidden for hundreds of years.
