Baldur’s Gate 3’s Dark Urge campaign is absolutely worth playing

Baldur’s Gate 3The campaign is so rich and dense that finishing it even just once is quite a challenge. Doing just one playthrough will mean you’ll miss out on some paths and branches of the game. It is hard to imagine a more extreme difference than playing your next game as Dark Urge. The Dark Urge is an origin character, found in the same part of character creation as our good friends Shadowheart, Astarion, Lae’zel, Wyll, and Karlach. Baldur’s Gate 3 has been out for long enough for fans to compare and contrast between campaigns, it’s worth taking the time to recognize how dang cool the Dark Urge is.

The Dark Urge — or Durge, a portmanteau used on social media, à la “Shart” for Shadowheart — is an albino dragonborn by default, but can be customized to look however the player likes. It’s actually better to choose a cute halfling Durge. More information about the productIt makes more of a sense than an intimidating draconic character. You see, the Durge comes with one hell of a problematic footnote: They are afflicted with a sometimes uncontrollable — one might even say a The Darkness — urge to murder everyone around them. It starts young. If Gale sticks out his arm in Act 1, asking you for help, then simply cut off his finger and let him go. It does mean he will never be able to join your group. The only thing you get is to keep his hand with yours for the remainder of the game.

Just like every other playthrough, the player has choices — the Dark Urge can be a multifaceted protagonist too! You may choose to ignore your condition. Some times, it’s a big oh-oh. You wake up and you’ve done a fucky-wucky and put someone in the forever box!

There’s a twist about the Durge and their origins that I won’t get into, because it’s worth experiencing for yourself. It makes for an amazing second playthrough. You can tell a tale of painful, hard-won redemption… or just rampage, if you prefer. I’m reminded of The Malkavian in The Durge. Vampire The Masquerade: BloodlinesIndependent Vegas runs in New Vegas, Fallout. The Durge can be played straight away. However, completing a Durge game in context with a previously completed one enriches the story.

Dark Urge may be a good choice for you. a lot if you’re just kicking off Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s not even an “evil” playthrough, per se; there are other ways of siding with the game’s villains. It’s possible to be an adventurer that doesn’t follow the Dark Urge, who joins forces with Absolute and sends windmill gnomes into oblivion. You could also torture children as a form of entertainment. It’s more like a constant battle against intrusive thoughts, and if you’re not prepared to meet every obstacle with steely resolve, you’re going to find yourself chopping off your party members’ limbs and freaking everybody out. But that doesn’t mean the Dark Urge is irredeemable. They can even be played as a real antihero who goes through a difficult redemption story.

It has inspired many memes. Baldur’s Gate 3 fans. The majority of fans understand the terrible burden that the Durge has to bear. However, it’s still fun to depict the Durge as a scamp and a rascal who can be contained with simple tricks like, say, a kennel.

It’s delightful taking the time to peel back the layers and explore Baldur’s Gate 3’s branching paths. Cestelle, a wood-elf who was romantically involved with Astarion, was my first character. She was also a heroic hero, who liked getting paid. This run was not as intense or deep. It lacked the intensity and depth of a Dark Urge Run, where I found myself hollering and shouting at every opportunity. If you’re done with Baldur’s Gate 3 and you haven’t tried Durge, it might be worth giving the RPG another shot for one of the most surprising campaigns — even if you occasionally wake up from a dead sleep screaming, lost, and covered in blood.
