Apex Legends PS5, Xbox Series X versions launch without 120hz gameplay

Apex Legends got long-awaited native apps for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on Tuesday, but there was a catch: The next-gen versions of the popular battle royale launched without support for 120hz gameplay — a much-requested feature for the competitive shooter.

Respawn Entertainment confirms developer on Twitter and in a blog post that today’s Warriors Collection event would also introduce the next-gen updates. Xbox Series X, PS5 and Xbox Series X get 4K visuals with 60fps, HDR visuals as well as improved shadows & draw distances. HDR is available in the Xbox Series S.

120hz gameplay is listed as “coming in future updates” to all next-gen consoles, along with further visual and audio improvements, and support for the PS5 DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

There’s no need to do anything to play the latest version of Apex Legends on Xbox, as it uses Smart Delivery to ensure you’re playing the best version of the game. Respawn provided instructions on how to update the game for PS5.

Some players were dissatisfied that 120Hz gameplay wasn’t given priority over 4K resolution with the next-gen update. Rival battle royale shooters Warzone: The Call of Duty And FortniteThey both offer ultra-fast refresh rates with lower resolutions on Xbox Series consoles PS5 or Xbox Series, which is why many players in competitive games prefer the responsiveness and crispness of 360hz visuals to that of the sharpness and detail of 4K visuals.

Up until April 12, the Warriors Collection will bring back 9-versus-9 Control and add a map and limited edition cosmetics.
