This is a timeless classic, The Exorcist It is as frightening today as it was in 1973 when it caused mild panic across the country. The film’s title is about Linda Blair, a teenage girl who begins acting out strangely. Her mother does everything she can to get her to change her mind. The realism of a mother’s desire to keep her daughter safe in an uncontrollable world set against a supernatural conflict pulls you right in from the very beginning, and keeps its hold on you far beyond the end of its two hour run-time. —PV

Don Siegel’s classic sci-fi film noir story of a California town whose residents are slowly taken over by emotionless copies of themselves has been remade many times (including the also-excellent 1978 version with Donald Sutherland), but few have the tension and emotional heart of the bone-chilling original. A local doctor (Kevin McCarthy) and his ex-girlfriend (Dana Wynter) are among the first to suspect what is happening, but it’s a struggle to convince anyone else of the madness that is occurring (or to know who to trust). At a crisp 80 minutes, you’re going to have a great time, but beware the pod people! — PV

Dealing both explicitly and allegorically with global warming and the dangers of human “exploration,” The last winter This film features Connie Britton and Ron Perlman, as well as a cast that is great. Denzel Washington wasn’t the only great movie star of all time. He was also bringing great movie star energy and excitement to other disposable thrillers. The Mighty QuinnBased on A.H.Z. Carr’s 1971 pulp novel Find Maubee, but gussied up with a title cribbed from a Bob Dylan song, would not be a highly recommendable murder mystery without the now-two-time-Oscar-winning actor — despite a script from Blade RunnerHampton Fancher writes that the level of sleuthing involved is quite basic. Washington is a formidable character as Xavier Quinn (the police chief on a fictional Caribbean island), who ends up investigating Maubee (Robert Townsend), after a millionaire resort owner becomes dead. On the trail of the killer, Quinn interrogates witnesses, races home to pick up his kid, outsteps a seductive femme fatale, tries to mend a fractured relationship with his estranged wife, and dodges enough bullets to earn the “mighty” title. Which results in Washington pairing muscle with charm, smug authority with in-over-his-head anxiety, and a calculating sense of the island’s dynamics. Michael Rose and his reggae support Washington. The Mighty QuinnThis is a 90 minute whodunnit that has a 70s-style crime twist. It’s set in the place of beautiful scenes with an equally captivating onscreen presence. For some of us, that’s the ideal vacation. —Matt Patches

Jet Li is also the star of Gabriel Yulaw (! ), and Delroy Lindo. Jason Statham (with an American accent !!!)), and Jason Li. Star as the multi-verse police officers sent to find him. West Side StoryIt is subversive reminder of America’s racial tensions. But it’s also an upbeat, colorful, immensely earwormy musical that recasts Romeo and Juliet as a mid-’50s face-off between a white street gang and a Puerto Rican one in New York City. While there have been some movies that are more incisive about prejudice and anti-immigrant violence, it is clear that these issues were a regular part of American life during the 1960s. West Side Story’sEven though it is difficult to believe that this candid look at racism, and how they hinder the American dream, still seems bold today. Its open admission of the superficiality and destructive power racism has remained touching. And the elaborate songs and dance sets are still winning. — Tasha Robinson
