Find Humanity in War with Long Gone Days

A Quick Intro to Long Gone Days

Long Gone DaysIt is a JRPG, set in an alternate version of our future world that has been ravaged by war. This game, which combines traditional exploration with expressive storytelling and turn-based combat to explore human connection in war, focuses on language barriers and borders, as well as civilians.

You play as Rourke, a young man who has trained all his life to be a sniper for The Core—a secretive and militaristic nation with a charismatic leader. Rourke is a man who believes in his country’s ideals, but on the first mission of his career he finds himself caught up in a conspiracy which strains his conscience. He then deserts.

As an idealistic fugitive, Rourke will go on an odyssey to escape The Core’s clutches and avert the catastrophe they’ve set in motion. Rourke will travel across Europe and encounter language barriers in every country (including German and Polish) to make progress.

Expand your skills by forming bonds with a group of comrades

Rourke is fortunate to have help. Rourke’s journey will see him forge relationships with colorful characters. They each contribute to the story arcs of Rourke’s journey, as well as valuable combat skills and knowledge. The characters are the soul and heart of Long Gone Days, and they serve as bridges between the player and the distinct communities found in each of the game’s three major cities.

Adair is one of these party members. She’s a calm and collected soldier, who trained to be a medic and seems to have accepted the price of war. By contrast, players will also meet Lynn and Ivan – civilians who find themselves under attack by the Core. Lynn is quiet but won’t hesitate to fight tooth and nail for those she loves. Meanwhile, Ivan is a pacifist who will not hold a gun but contributes everything he can to support the party—including foreign language skills and some fantastic cooking. Atiye and Pascal are two fan-favorite characters from later chapters in the game, and while we don’t want to spoil too much of their stories, suffice to say each brings a unique set of skills, perspectives, and language capabilities to the table.

The key to progress is in overcoming language barriers

A world of possibilities opens up as characters add their language skills to your group. When you first arrive in a new city and can’t understand the language, you’ll find yourself feeling a bit alienated and without much freedom—much like in real life. Once you learn to speak the language, you’ll be able to navigate through the towns, visit shops and advance storylines. Communication is essential for completing sidequests and advancing the story.

Adair’s ability to communicate in the native language allows her and her party to quickly integrate into the world of other characters, both through the game’s main quest and its side missions. The game’s quests focus on the small stories of specific characters, but each also feeds into the larger plot. As an example, one might escape curfew so that they can bring medicine to their grandmother at home, aid a local animal sanctuary in searching for stray pets before the city evacuates or defang propaganda using hand-made arts. The key to unlocking these emotional experiences is language.
