Max is removing one of its best shows at the perfect time to watch it
Fall used to be clearer — a shift in the wind, a turn of the leaves, inescapable pumpkin spice bullshit. The ecological indicators are sometimes off, and it may take a while for the crisp air of autumn to reach you before school starts. One way to get into the spirit of autumn, and all its rustic and reddish-orange delights, is by watching The Garden Wall.
Up until the end of August you can stream The Garden WallMax and Hulu. Starting Sept. 1, you’ll only be able to stream it on Hulu. Who knows why the gods of streaming saw fit to shuffle this one off a platform just at the time we need it most, but it’s as good a reason as any to ring fall in early, weather be damned.
Spend a couple of minutes with Wirt and Greg, (Collin Dean), to see why they are perfect to welcome the new season. Lost in some woods — dubbed “the Unknown” — they happen upon one conundrum after the next, each one more alternately spooky or spoopy than the last, as they struggle to make their way home.
The Garden WallIt excels at switching between an imaginary world and another that is more real. It doesn’t take long for Wirt and Greg to feel like your own travel companions, with everyone in awe of the vividly drawn world in their own way (Greg, for instance, completely jibes with it). It’s not long before you find yourself in a place where the residents all have pumpkin faces, and they sing harvest songs while dancing to an autumnal maypole. Maybe it is “some kind of weird cult where they wear vegetable costumes and dance around a big thing,” but who cares! It seems like they are nice people. But maybe Beatrice (Melanie Lynskey), the talking bird you’ve arrived with, is right, and it’s something far darker and more mystical.
Other shows may feel the urge to quickly define the world. The Garden WallJumping rope is simply a way to keep up with the line through Unknown. It’s a charming liminal space, and if audiences are game to indulge it, they’ll find the unraveling of the mysteries Greg, Wirt, and Beatrice encounter rewarding.
With Wirt’s worry and Greg’s easy delight, The Garden WallIt elegantly balances two opposing feelings. Max knows better than to abandon it when fall is just around the bend (hopefully). It’s not necessary to watch it on every channel to stay up to date with its fruit. As a result, it is not necessary to subscribe to every streaming channel. The Garden Wall teaches us, sometimes it’s worth undergoing some hardship to find the sweet reward at the end. So mark your calendars: It’s Autumn August now. Happy harvest, all.
The Garden WallMax and Hulu now offer streaming. It will be available on Hulu only after Sept. 1.
