The best anime to watch in winter 2023 and when they premiere (January)

We wish you a happy new year. 2023 is finally upon us, and there’s an embarrassment of riches when it comes to new anime to be excited for — from the highly anticipated premieres of series like Attack on Titan Final Season 3, Kimetsu No Yaiba Swordsmith Village Ark Demon SlayerAnd Jujutsu KaisenSeason 2: The most exciting premieres Witch Hat Atelier, Science Saru’s Scott Pilgrim adaptation, Heavenly Delusion, Kaiju No. 8You can find out more about it here.

For now, though, let’s focus our attention on what’s coming out this season. With a strong selection of new titles for Winter 2023, the year is beginning strongly. Trigun Stampede, Nier: Automata Ver. 1.1aJunji Nishimura ().Ranma ½) and Mamoru Oshii’s (Ghost in the Shell) Hikari no Ō (“The Fire Hunter”), as well as the long-awaited return of beloved series like Tsurune, Vinland Saga, Tokyo RevengersAnd Bungo Stray Dogs!

We’ll continue to update this list as we get a clearer picture of everything the upcoming season has to offer, but in the meantime, here are some of the most exciting anime airing this winter that you should look forward to.


Tsurune: Linking Shot

TsuruneThe most beloved 2018 animation from Kyoto Animation, Anime (K-On!, Violet Evergarden) based on writer Kotoko Ayano and illustrator Chinatsu Morimoto’s light novel series, finally returns to television with a new season. Titled Tsurune: Linking Shot, this season will pick up after the events of the previous season and follow Minato Narumiya and co.’s attempts to navigate the challenges of adolescence while honing their mastery of the art of archery. Takuya Yamamura is the confirmed director. She directed the original season. Tsurune: Linking Shot.

Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4

Studio Bones’ (Eureka Seven, My Hero AcademiaThe most popular anime version of Bungo Stray DogsThe new season returns to the series this winter. Atsushi Nakajima and the Armed Detective Agency are part of a plot by Decay of the Angel terrorist group. In order to clear their names, Nakajima and co. must thwart the terrorists’ plan to plunge the world into peril, all while staying one step ahead of the Hunting Dogs, an elite task force hellbent on bringing the Armed Detective Agency into custody… by any means necessary.

Bungo Stray DogsSeason 4 will premiere on January 4, and will be streamed by Crunchyroll.

Onimai: I’m Now Your Sister!

This slice-of-life comedy anime follows the story of Mahiro Oyama, a NEET (“Not in Education, Employment, or Training”) otaku living with his scientist younger sister who, after taking part in one of her experiments, awakens the next morning to discover he’s transformed into a girl. Holy Ranma ½!

Revenger

Shochiku Japanese movie distributor, Nitroplus videogame company, and Ajiado animation studio (Bookworm Ascendance)’s new original anime centers on Kurima Raizo, a member of the once-powerful Satsuma samurai clan. After he is betrayed and left for dead by someone he once trusted, Raizo is recruited by Revenger — an organization of vigilante assassins who work on behalf of those unable to seek justice themselves.

Buddy Daddies

Miss Spy x Family already? Do not worry. Buddy DaddiesStudio P.A. has released a new, original anime called “Works”. Work (You Boy Kongming, ShirobakoYou might find the perfect thing for your cravings for action-packed domestic hijinks in ), Rei Suwa and Kazuki Kurusu, professional assassins, are shown in the series. They accidentally become roommates and end up taking care of Miri Unasaka (the 4-year-old girl of a prominent mob boss).

The preview trailer certainly looks snazzy enough, boasting a motion comic-style presentation reminiscent of Masashi Ishihama’s work on the original opening for Spy x FamilyAs well as an original big band jazz score. Tokyo Revengers: Christmas showdown (season 2)

Tokyo Revengers, The time-hopping gang drama series returns with a new season in January. Takemichi Hanagaki is 26-year old layabout. In a twist, fate has him pushed into front of a moving train, and transported twelve years back in time.

Hanagaki jumps back and forth from one time to the next to prevent catastrophes. Hanagaki also has to face ruthless gang members as well as seedy killers in an attempt to save the lives and livelihoods of his loved ones and his friends. If that description weren’t enticing enough, the first season just so happened to be one of our favorite anime of 2021.

Tokyo Revengers Christmas Showdown premieres Jan. 7.

Trigun Stampede

Orange’s new animation features the Humanoid Typhoon in a fresh anime version.Beastars, The Land of the Lustrous). Trigun StampedeThis is the story of Vash The Stampede. A pacifist gunsmith who searches the far corners of desert planets on his personal quest to find his twin brother Knives millionss, it follows.

While set in a separate continuity from Yasuhiro Nightow’s original manga and the 1998 anime, which was produced by studio Madhouse and directed by Satoshi Nishimura, those familiar with either one should be able to surmise what the probable conclusion of this season (and the possible whereabouts of one particular fan-favorite character) might be, given the name of the city mentioned briefly in the above trailer.

Nier: Automata Ver. 1.1a

Nier: AutomataFinally, an anime is being made! Ryouji Yamamoto (Directed)Gurren Lagann Parallel Works, Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt), Nier: Automata Ver. 1.1aThe story of 9S and 2B, android soldiers who fought to save humanity from an army made up of robotic aliens, will be told in this retelling. However, it may differ from the video game in some ways.

You might be wondering what kind of divergences there are. Well, you’ll have to watch the series in order to find out! Vinland Saga season 2

Nearly four years later Vinland SagaIt makes its triumphant return on television. Thorfinn is now a slave in Denmark on the farm of King Canute The Great, one year later. Thorfinn makes friends with Einar, a fellow slave, as he struggles to find a reason to live after Askeladd’s death. Meanwhile, Canute is still on his quest to create a paradise in the Earth. Shuhei Yabuta directed the premiere season. Vinland SagaAlong with the existing animators, he will be returning to direct the second series.

Vinland SagaThe second season premieres January 9th on Crunchyroll. It will also stream on Netflix and Netflix.

Kaina from the Great Snow Sea

Polygon Pictures, The anime studio behind Blame!And Knights of SidoniaFor a brand new anime original, Tsutomu Niki, the manga author, is reunited with. Kaina from the Great Snow Sea. Described as “boy-meets-girl high fantasy,” the series is set in a postapocalyptic world where the Earth is slowly being consumed by a sea of snow and humanity ekes out a life in the canopies of giant “Orbital Trees” that reach up high into the sky. Kaina, a boy living in the Orbital Trees, meets Liliha, the princess of a small country located in the snow sea, and together the two embark on a journey to uncover the mysteries of the past in search of humanity’s future.

The Fire Hunter

Based on Rieko Hirata and Akihiro Yamada’s fantasy novels, The Fire HunterIt takes place in a post-apocalyptic environment that is covered by a vast forest full of flamelings, otherworldly creatures. The premise of the series itself, which concerns two children named Tōko and Kōshi whose lives are brought together by a twist of fate, sounds incredibly promising, but it’s the talent attached to the production that’s the Real There are many reasons to be excited.

Junji Nishimura (Ranma ½Mamoru Obshii (Ghost in the Shell, Blood: The Last VampireThe Oshii brothers have again teamed up to collaborate on this project. With the former writing the scripts and the latter directing, Other Oshii past collaborators, Kazuchika Kise will also be involved in the production.Ghost in the Shell 2, Innocence) as one of the series’ chief animation directors and Kenji Kawai (Ghost in the Shell, Avalon(who will also be writing the music). Takuya Saido designed the character designs.Outlaw Star, Macross Zero) alone look fantastic and almost reminiscent of Ayumi Kurashima’s work on Devilman Crybaby or Naoya Wada’s work on Japan Sinks 2020.

The Fire HunterCrunchyroll will broadcast the premiere on January 14th.

Junji Ito Maniac – Japanese Tales of the Macabre

An animated horror anthology that adapts 20 horror stories written by Junji Ito is now available. Many of these are first time adaptations. These adaptations are: Tomie, Souichi’s Convenient CurseAnd Hanging Balloons. Both TomieAnd SouichiThese were originally adapted for the 2018 anime anthology series. Junji Ito Collection, but look — I will not be accused of looking a gift horse in the mouth and complain that it needs braces.
