God of War Ragnarok Alfheim guide: All Odin’s Ravens, Nornir Chests

God of War RagnarökUnlike its predecessor which allowed you to visit only five of the Norse realms, this version brings nine into life. However, one of the biggest realms you’ll visit in RagnarökThis is a good time to play, as it comes very early. God of War (2018): Alfheim.

Alfheim, this time, is feeling different and the Fimbulwinter effects in a unique way. In this guide, we’ll help you collect all of the various treasure chests, Odin’s Ravens, Artifacts, and more as you go on your adventure with Kratos, Mimir, Atreus, and Tyr.

Take NoteThis guide will tell you all you need to know about Alfheim. As you might expect, you’ll be back later in the game and be able to access previously inaccessible areas with new equipment. If you reach the end of one of the sections in this guide and still notice “undiscovered” stuff on your map, it simply means you can’t get that item yet. We’ll update this guide to include information about the second visit to Alfheim by the time you get there.

The Strond

You will be taken to Alfheim’s Temple of Light by the Strond, which is the entry to Alfheim. It didn’t appear in the first game, and establishes that Alfheim is now more of a desert tone than the bright, watery, and beautiful realm seen in God of War (2018).

You’ll see the Nornir Chest right in front of you when you land. This is a brazier chest, and you’ll need to find the three matching Braziers nearby if you want the treasure.

Brazier 1

The first brazier is directly behind you if you’re looking at the Nornir Chest. It’s tucked in some rocks over the ledge. It’s now time to light it.

Brazier 2

Brazier 3

It is quite a trip to activate the third brazier if you already have Hex Arrows.

Return to your original position before the Nornir Chest was dropped. Continue climbing up the wall, then grappling. Turn left when you get to the landing area with the circle at the ground and then drop down from the ledge. Look up and you’ll be able to reach the brazier from your new position.

Once you’ve lit the three braziers go ahead and grab the Nornir Chest.

Locate the column on your left that has purple crystal gunk. Position Kratos as we’ve positioned Kratos the image above (with the crystal on your right and only a few feet away) and aim at the bottom left-hand corner. It should glow blue when the purple line is lit up. Throw the ax and hit the bird when it lights up blue.

Artifact – Kvasir’s Poem 1

The Legendary Chest can be a bit tricky. Proceed through the Temple of Light until you enter the big dark room where you’ll need to grapple across a series of suspended gold discs to reach the other side.

Go down, and grab the first disc. Once the game has you pointed your camera towards the red grapple point, go left and start grappling to the grapple point below your eyes. Keep grappling along this path until you’re on solid footing.

Once you have reached flat ground, turn left and swing your Blades to the right the purple crystal lantern. To break the light crystals on the wall, you will need to hit the lantern with an ax.

Bell 1

You can use the sonic bow to dismantle any ore that blocks your bell. Return to the Nornir Chest.

All of these bells are pretty quick, so you’ll need to move fast. As you stand at the chest, point your ax toward the purple crystal.

Bells 2 and 3.

While standing near the chest, you can see both the second and third bells. You can ring the first bell using the purple crystal. While moving left, remember your ax. Toss the ax towards the bell to the right. Then, immediately remember your ax.

If you do this fast enough, you’ll break all three seals and gain access to the Nornir Chest.

When you land, look right and read the runes on the wall to get the “Limitless” entry.

Canyons

Once you return Tyr back to Sindri’s house, you’ll be able to enter The Canyons. This area isn’t much of an area at all, and is really more of an interlude. Still, there’s a shop, an Odin’s Raven, and two lore pieces to find here.

Lore – “Vulture’s Gold” Treasure Map

Once Tyr has been sent through the portal, open the Canyon and walk forward until Tyr reaches a glowing object on the ground. This is next to the spear that was planted in the sand.

You can opt to walk a few more steps instead of climbing up the stairs. You’ll see a lore pillar. Read it to unlock the “U-Natur-Liker” Lore entry.

The Below

The Barrens has a cave in the bottom right corner. This cave is used mostly for the Secret of the Sands quest. (You can tell you’re at the right cave because it’s lit up with fire all around it.) By doing this quest in The Below, you’ll free a captured creature and stop the constant sandstorm raging in The Barrens.

Kratos breaks some Dark Elf corruption in God of War Ragnarok

Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon

Although this section may seem linear at first, the game will block you from reaching the corruption puzzles.God of War (2018) mixed with the earlier purple crystal puzzles Ragnarök’s version of Alfheim. Grab your mallet and smash all three corruption pods simultaneously.

This puzzle often looks much harder than it actually is. If you’re unable to make the throw, move Kratos someplace else and try again. This quest is all about angles, so just try someplace new if you’re having trouble.

Once you’ve freed the Hafgufa (that’s the big-ass jellyfish) underground, you’ll need to release it back on the surface. Look up at the sky and follow the quest marker to find one. God of War Ragnarök’s more beautiful spectacles.

Patience and Lore

A map of Alfheim in God of War Ragnarok

Continue through the cave, avoiding the purple crystals. Once you reach the top of the cave, grab your rope to escape. Go down the zipline. Continue to climb the rock until you reach the end. Jump to your left when you reach the other side.

After you jump down twice, you’ll be right in front of the Nornir Chest and a bell. As we mentioned previously, this is a bell Nornir Chest, and you’ll need to ring all three at once to get the loot.

Open the Nornir Chest gate before you start anything.

Bell 1

Take a step back towards the Nornir Chest’s grapple points and then use your axe to cut the Corruption. Return to the grapple rocks, and move past the Corruption blockage. When you reach your destination, you’ll see the first Bell hanging in the window.

To your right, jump down and lift the wooden gate. Look up, then use your ax to open the wooden gate.

The Barrens

The Barrens is the first of two massive areas in Alfheim, and it’s the only one you’ll be able to visit on your first time through the realm of the elves. This area is absolutely packed with stuff to do, and even has an underground section, which hosts the truly excellent “Secret of the Sands” side-quest. (Pro tip: If you want to get rid of the sand storm here as quickly as possible, finish the “Secret of the Sands” ASAP.)

Buried Treasure – Vulture’s Gold – Lethal Detonation accessory

A map of Alfheim in God of War Ragnarok

You will ride into The Barrens, and then go back to the right on the map. You’re looking for a giant skeleton of what looks almost like a Lyngbakr. It’s hard to miss.

Go to the entrance of The Barrens, and head to the large, circular gateway — like you’re coming from Sindri’s shop. You should immediately turn left and pay attention to the surrounding walls. If you spot a hole that you are able to squeeze through, you should stop your sled and get up.

Once inside, you’ll see some dark elf corruption. Look up at the one in front of your and then to the right for the two other ones. Your ax will strike the purple crystal. You can bounce your ax in the other bulbs. Once it’s passed through the second, recall your ax. If you’re in the right spot, it should shoot back into your hands at the perfect angle and destroy the third bulb.

After the corruption is removed, go up to the Legendary Chest and get the Rond of Affliction.
