God of War Ragnarok Alfheim guide: All Odin’s Ravens, Nornir Chests
God of War RagnarökUnlike its predecessor which allowed you to visit only five of the Norse realms, this version brings nine into life. However, one of the biggest realms you’ll visit in RagnarökThis is a good time to play, as it comes very early. God of War (2018): Alfheim.
Alfheim, this time, is feeling different and the Fimbulwinter effects in a unique way. In this guide, we’ll help you collect all of the various treasure chests, Odin’s Ravens, Artifacts, and more as you go on your adventure with Kratos, Mimir, Atreus, and Tyr.
Take NoteThis guide will tell you all you need to know about Alfheim. As you might expect, you’ll be back later in the game and be able to access previously inaccessible areas with new equipment. If you reach the end of one of the sections in this guide and still notice “undiscovered” stuff on your map, it simply means you can’t get that item yet. We’ll update this guide to include information about the second visit to Alfheim by the time you get there.
The Strond
You will be taken to Alfheim’s Temple of Light by the Strond, which is the entry to Alfheim. It didn’t appear in the first game, and establishes that Alfheim is now more of a desert tone than the bright, watery, and beautiful realm seen in God of War (2018).
Broken History: Lore
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Walk forward immediately after passing the Mystic Gateway.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
On the statue in front of you, before you head up the left path toward the Temple of Light, you’ll see some runic writing on the wall. Investigate it for the “Broken History” entry.
Lore: The Living Desert
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Follow the Mystic Gateway’s left-hand path to the crack you must squeeze through. Stop.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Instead of going through the wall, drop off the left side of the rock you’re currently on. You’ll see a lore marker right in front of you. Read it to get the “Living Desert” entry.
Nornir Chest
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Continue to squeeze through the rock cracks mentioned earlier, and then drop to your left.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You’ll see the Nornir Chest right in front of you when you land. This is a brazier chest, and you’ll need to find the three matching Braziers nearby if you want the treasure.
Brazier 1
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
The first brazier is directly behind you if you’re looking at the Nornir Chest. It’s tucked in some rocks over the ledge. It’s now time to light it.
Brazier 2
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Continue walking forward, past the Nornir Chest, until you reach the wall. The second brazier is located at the left side of the cliff. It is best to burn it.
Brazier 3
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
It is quite a trip to activate the third brazier if you already have Hex Arrows.
Return to your original position before the Nornir Chest was dropped. Continue climbing up the wall, then grappling. Turn left when you get to the landing area with the circle at the ground and then drop down from the ledge. Look up and you’ll be able to reach the brazier from your new position.
Once you’ve lit the three braziers go ahead and grab the Nornir Chest.
Odin’s Raven
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Continue on the path after the Nornir Chest. Step forward from the area above the circle and drop down to the ground.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Immediately after you turn the corner, you’ll see an Odin’s Ravens sitting on a dead tree behind a pillar. Move closer to the tree to use your ax for its destruction.
Artifact – Kvasir’s Poem
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Continue onward until you arrive at the locked chamber with the purple crystals. To open the door, follow the directions and use the Leviathan Axe.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Walk forward after the puzzle and get off the ledge in front. Turn left when you reach the cave and remove the pots. Walk into the cave and grab one of Kvasir’s Poems.
Legendary Chest – Skadi’s Edge light runic attack
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Follow the exact path we laid out for Kvasir’s Poem above.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You will find the Legendary Chest right by the Artifact as you approach the cave. Open it up to get Skadi’s Edge, a light runic attack.
Freyr Tributes – Artifact
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Continue forward until you reach the large block that’s blocking your path. Move to your right and lift the block. If you reach the door to the Temple of Light, you’ve gone too far.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
To the right of the block, near the boulder with the shiny cracks on it and a Nornir Chest you can’t unlock yet, you’ll find the first artifact in the Tributes to Freyr collection.
The Temple of Light
The Temple of Light, one of the largest returning places from this area of Jerusalem is the Temple of Light. God of War (2018). Here you’ll adventure through the holy structure with Tyr, Atreus, and Mimir in an attempt to find a hidden meaning in an old Jötnar shrine.
Lore – Bifrost Bridge
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Keep following the Temple of Light path to the Temple of Light, until you see the massive pillar of lights shooting from the water. To your right, you’ll see a massive spiral staircase. You can climb it, and then continue to your left.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Do it as soon as possible once you get to an edge of the staircase from which you can leap off. The temple will take you down to a lower floor. After killing the enemies, take a short detour to your right down a corridor. You’ll find the “Bifrost Bridge” Lore scroll sitting here.
Hades Retribution light runic attack – Legendary chest – Hades Retribution
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Continue following the above-described path until you reach the Lore Scroll. To reach an even lower level, continue down the hallway to the right with the scroll.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
After landing, walk ahead and turn to the left. You’ll find a Legendary Chest here. To receive the Hades Retribution light ranic attack, open it.
Odin’s Raven 1
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
The path we have described above for the lore Scroll is to be followed. Walk past the hall with the lore book until you get to the gate.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Behind this gate is the Odin’s Raven you’re looking for. You’ll need to use a purple crystal to get it. However, the purple crystal behind the raven won’t allow you to destroy it.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Locate the column on your left that has purple crystal gunk. Position Kratos as we’ve positioned Kratos the image above (with the crystal on your right and only a few feet away) and aim at the bottom left-hand corner. It should glow blue when the purple line is lit up. Throw the ax and hit the bird when it lights up blue.
Artifact – Kvasir’s Poem 1
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Keep climbing until you reach the top of the spiral staircase. Use your grapple and turn left before the light gate to climb the landing.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Up here, walk to your left and you’ll find one of Kvasir’s Poems sitting on the balcony.
Legendary Chest-Hilt of Gram Relic
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You will continue past the light-elf combat arena to reach the light gate. Here you can use the crank to lower a purple glass lantern. Take a left at the circle double doors and jump down to the crank.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Walk forward and pull the chain until you can’t pull it anymore. Take your ax and aim for the purple crystal mirror. Once it glows blue, you can throw the ax to it and let it stay where it is. To drop the chest, let go of the chain. To get the Hilt Of Gram Relic, climb down and lift the chest.
Artifact – Kvasir’s Poem 2
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Hang left after you have solved the above cog puzzle and walked through the light gate.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You’ll see a little room with a table, on which is one of Kvasir’s Poems. Grab it, and you can move on.
Legendary chest – Rune-Engraved release accessory
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
The Legendary Chest can be a bit tricky. Proceed through the Temple of Light until you enter the big dark room where you’ll need to grapple across a series of suspended gold discs to reach the other side.
Go down, and grab the first disc. Once the game has you pointed your camera towards the red grapple point, go left and start grappling to the grapple point below your eyes. Keep grappling along this path until you’re on solid footing.
Once you have reached flat ground, turn left and swing your Blades to the right the purple crystal lantern. To break the light crystals on the wall, you will need to hit the lantern with an ax.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Once the crystal is broken, you can turn right again to grapple towards the chest. To get the Rune-Engraved Release accessory, walk forward and lift it. To return to the main path, lift the door to your right.
Nornir Chest
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Keep going on this path, until you come to the Light bridge and the two shattered statues. Turn right and cross to the other side to locate a Nornir Box.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You will need to ensure that all the bells ring at once in order to open this bell chest.
Bell 1
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You can use the sonic bow to dismantle any ore that blocks your bell. Return to the Nornir Chest.
All of these bells are pretty quick, so you’ll need to move fast. As you stand at the chest, point your ax toward the purple crystal.
Bells 2 and 3.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
While standing near the chest, you can see both the second and third bells. You can ring the first bell using the purple crystal. While moving left, remember your ax. Toss the ax towards the bell to the right. Then, immediately remember your ax.
If you do this fast enough, you’ll break all three seals and gain access to the Nornir Chest.
Odin’s Raven 2
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Continue walking forward, starting at the Nornir Chest. Keep moving forward, until you arrive at a pair of purple crystals flanking your steps. You will see a small, wrapped tree-shaped turret to your left.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
On this ledge, you’ll see one of Odin’s Ravens bouncing back and forth. It can be killed with your ax.
Limitless with Lore
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Keep going through the Temple of Light, until you get to the huge pillar of light that Tyr assists you in opening. To reach the small circular platform, use the grapple to turn left before going up the stairs.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
When you land, look right and read the runes on the wall to get the “Limitless” entry.
Canyons
Once you return Tyr back to Sindri’s house, you’ll be able to enter The Canyons. This area isn’t much of an area at all, and is really more of an interlude. Still, there’s a shop, an Odin’s Raven, and two lore pieces to find here.
Lore – “Vulture’s Gold” Treasure Map
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Once Tyr has been sent through the portal, open the Canyon and walk forward until Tyr reaches a glowing object on the ground. This is next to the spear that was planted in the sand.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Pick up the glowing item to reveal a new piece of Lore: the Vulture’s Gold treasure map. The hint can be used to locate a loot item later in the game. For more help, see our entry at The Barrens.
Odin’s Raven
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Proceed forward until you reach Sindri’s camp. The entrance to Barrens is located on the left. On the right, you will find a fence with pillars.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Look over the fence on the right and you’ll see one of Odin’s Ravens soaring around the area. Use your ax to take it down.
Lore: U-naturliker
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Walk up to Sindri’s shop and the mystic gateway in The Canyons.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You can opt to walk a few more steps instead of climbing up the stairs. You’ll see a lore pillar. Read it to unlock the “U-Natur-Liker” Lore entry.
The Below
The Barrens has a cave in the bottom right corner. This cave is used mostly for the Secret of the Sands quest. (You can tell you’re at the right cave because it’s lit up with fire all around it.) By doing this quest in The Below, you’ll free a captured creature and stop the constant sandstorm raging in The Barrens.
Secret of the Sands: Favorite
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Follow the directions to The Barrens Cave, located in the middle-right of the map. If you turn right after leaving Sindri’s camp, you should arrive in no time.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Continue forward along the path through an army of darkness elves after you’ve dropped.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Although this section may seem linear at first, the game will block you from reaching the corruption puzzles.God of War (2018) mixed with the earlier purple crystal puzzles Ragnarök’s version of Alfheim. Grab your mallet and smash all three corruption pods simultaneously.
This puzzle often looks much harder than it actually is. If you’re unable to make the throw, move Kratos someplace else and try again. This quest is all about angles, so just try someplace new if you’re having trouble.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Once you’ve freed the Hafgufa (that’s the big-ass jellyfish) underground, you’ll need to release it back on the surface. Look up at the sky and follow the quest marker to find one. God of War Ragnarök’s more beautiful spectacles.
Patience and Lore
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Follow the path through the cave, until you arrive at the large area with many purple crystals. After defeating the Legion of Dark Elfs that is attacking you, climb up to the right wall.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Once you have reached the top, you can kick the guard blocking the grapple point and use your Leviathan Axe for breaking the darkness elf corruption. You will find the glowing chest when you jump down. When you reach it, look right at the wall and read the runes to get the “Patience” lore entry.
Nornir Chest
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Continue through the cave, avoiding the purple crystals. Once you reach the top of the cave, grab your rope to escape. Go down the zipline. Continue to climb the rock until you reach the end. Jump to your left when you reach the other side.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
After you jump down twice, you’ll be right in front of the Nornir Chest and a bell. As we mentioned previously, this is a bell Nornir Chest, and you’ll need to ring all three at once to get the loot.
Open the Nornir Chest gate before you start anything.
Bell 1
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Take a step back towards the Nornir Chest’s grapple points and then use your axe to cut the Corruption. Return to the grapple rocks, and move past the Corruption blockage. When you reach your destination, you’ll see the first Bell hanging in the window.
To your right, jump down and lift the wooden gate. Look up, then use your ax to open the wooden gate.
Bell 2.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Run out of the gate after ringing first bell. Jump down to reach Nornir Chest. To ring the bell, you will need to throw your ax directly in front of it.
Bell 3
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Once the second bell is rung walk around the Nornir Chest through the gate and ring third bell. If you do this order fast enough, you’ll be able to turn around and claim the Nornir Chest’s loot for yourself.
Legendary Chest-Shoulder Straps of Radiance
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Once you have freed the Hafgufa make your way to the surface.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Continue following the route until your grapple crashes through the ground. Once you land, walk forward and you’ll find the Legendary Chest just sitting there. You will find the Shoulder Straps of Radiance armor inside.
The Barrens
The Barrens is the first of two massive areas in Alfheim, and it’s the only one you’ll be able to visit on your first time through the realm of the elves. This area is absolutely packed with stuff to do, and even has an underground section, which hosts the truly excellent “Secret of the Sands” side-quest. (Pro tip: If you want to get rid of the sand storm here as quickly as possible, finish the “Secret of the Sands” ASAP.)
Buried Treasure – Vulture’s Gold – Lethal Detonation accessory
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You will ride into The Barrens, and then go back to the right on the map. You’re looking for a giant skeleton of what looks almost like a Lyngbakr. It’s hard to miss.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Place your sled in front of the beast, and you can walk into the cave. Under the teeth you’ll see a glowing gold spot if you picked up the treasure map in the canyon. You can interact with this spot and dig your first cache of treasure or the Lethal Detonation accessory.
Odin’s Raven
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You will find the skeleton in the upper right corner of this map.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
On the right side of the skull, in the right eye socket, you’ll see one of Odin’s Ravens just sitting there. You can throw your axe at it.
Lore: The Desert of Our Ignorance
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You can find the skeleton at the top-right corner of this map. We have already described it.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Go through the skull and into the beast’s body. You can kill the inside enemies. Continue following the spine until you find a place you can climb. Instead of going up, look right and you’ll find a lore panel. Read it to get the “Desert of Our Ignorance” entry.
Artifact – Kvasir’s Poem
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
The skeleton is located in the right-hand corner of this map. This information was provided by us above.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Fighting your way through the beast and entering its throat, Once the enemies have died, continue following the spine until reaching a wall where you can climb. When you reach the top, look to your right and you’ll find one of Kvasir’s Poems.
Belt of Radiance: Legendary Chest
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Follow the trail to The Barrens’ giant skeleton at the rear.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Follow the spine to reach the wall. At the top, walk forward and you’ll see a giant, golden chest. You will find the Belt of Radiance armor when you open it.
Odin’s Raven 2
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Make your way to the broken elvish temple in the top left of The Barrens map, just under the word “the.”
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
On the left side of the temple, you’ll see a dead, twisted tree. You’ll see one of Odin’s Ravens on the trunk. It’s yours to tame.
Freyr Tributes – Artifact
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Follow the directions above to reach the broken-elvish temple located in the middle of the map.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You can climb into the temple by climbing up the wall at the front and clearing out any dark elves. Walk right up the steps once the coast is cleared. You’ll find a Tribute to Freyr Artifact lying next to a lore pillar, which is…
Lore – The Tower’s Purpose
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You can climb into the temple of Elfs located at the top left corner.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
After you’ve killed the enemies, walk down the stairs to your right and inspect the Lore pillar to get the “Tower’s Purpose” entry.
Lore – The Lost Pages
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Make your way to the same elf temple we described above, just under the “The” on the map.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Go inside to kill the dark elves. Take the path to the left and you’ll see a little scroll lying on the ground. To get The Lost Pages, pick it up.
Legendary Chest-Gauntlets of Radiance
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You will need to make one last trip to The Barrens map’s top-left elf temple.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Follow the right path from inside. To obtain the Gauntlets Of Radiance gloves, open the glowing Legendary Chest in gold.
Nornir Chest
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Make your way to the rock island between the skeleton and the elf temple in The Barrens — just under the first R on the map.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You’ll see a large square building and a rock lip that you can step up. Up the step, you’ll find the Nornir Chest. This is another brazier Nornir chest, and it’s a little tricky.
Brazier 1
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
You will find the Nornir Chest right by the first brazier. Turn left, and light the flames with your Blades of Chaos.
Brazier 2
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Hang from the Nornir Chest by jumping off the lip. Eventually you’ll see a brazier. Continue along to the back until you’re within range, then light it with the Blades of Chaos.
Brazier 3
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
It is not easy to find the final Brazier. Follow the path to the end of the building. The Nornir Chest is on your right. Take your ax to the Dark Elf Corruption pods. Once you are done, go back to the Nornir Chest.
Now look up at the top of the building and you’ll see the third Brazier. You can throw an ax at the red container to set it off. Atreus may also be instructed to use an arrow to open the brazier.
Draugr Hole
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Look on the map of The Barrens and you’ll see three little plateaus on the left side. You should go to the farthest left, as that is usually the largest.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
The entrance is located at the front. The Draugr Hole is your final stop.
Legendary Chest-Rond of Affliction
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Go to the entrance of The Barrens, and head to the large, circular gateway — like you’re coming from Sindri’s shop. You should immediately turn left and pay attention to the surrounding walls. If you spot a hole that you are able to squeeze through, you should stop your sled and get up.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Once inside, you’ll see some dark elf corruption. Look up at the one in front of your and then to the right for the two other ones. Your ax will strike the purple crystal. You can bounce your ax in the other bulbs. Once it’s passed through the second, recall your ax. If you’re in the right spot, it should shoot back into your hands at the perfect angle and destroy the third bulb.
After the corruption is removed, go up to the Legendary Chest and get the Rond of Affliction.
Freyr’s Tribute: Artifact
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Turn right at the Barrens entrance. You will need to squeeze through the hole in the wall we mentioned in our Legendary Chest entry.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
When you are inside, move to your left and lift the Tribute Freyr Artifact up off the ground.
Lore-Gulon Cull
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
To the left of The Barrens’ giant skeleton, head south. You will reach the round arena, which has elf statues and what appears like a tombstone at its center.
Image: Santa Monica Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment via Polygon
Walk toward the cliff wall and you’ll see a very obvious Lore marker just sitting there. Walk up and read it to get the “Gulon Cull” lore entry.
