The Making of Gotham Knights, Available Now for Xbox Series X|S
After a while, the conversation had changed to just a few people writing on whiteboards. Some were underlined to emphasize their points.
As part of our exploration around a different kind of game set in Gotham City, our team at Warner Bros. Games Montréal had spent weeks talking about the superhero fantasy — the kind that tends to dominate in DC’s Batman Universe — and what aspects of that we could bring to life for the first time. Over the course of several sessions, our group of experienced developers in game design, narrative animation and art began to concentrate on the two major aspects of the fantasy. These were the evolution of street-level criminals into legendary heroes, as well as the team-up of superheroes.

For the first topic we can draw from eight decades’ worth of DC comics publishing history. This will allow us to show how comic characters change over time. Dick Grayson’s version of Robin had parted company with Batman at college age and gone on to lead the Titans and eventually adopt a completely new (non-sidekick) identity as Nightwing. Barbara Gordon started her Batgirl life as the rebellious teenager daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon. After sustaining a serious injury, she developed an innovative approach to fighting crime under the name Oracle. Playing games is a way for players to express their creativity and grow. The players want to become heroes of aspiration. But they want to be able to do better.. Set goals and find new ways to achieve them.
The second aspect was how superhero fantasies were amplified when multiple heroes joined together to defeat the arch-villain. For many, it was an echo of other experiences where social connection and co-op played a major role. Some players like narrative while others love it. even moreWhen they have their friends there to share the experience. Although players love taking on challenging situations, for many this enjoyment increases as teammates communicate and coordinate their actions to make new possibilities.

The names were all we could see. Sometimes, someone would write down their signature moves and then draw a line from one of the heroes. This gave us an insight into how that character might feel in combat, stealth, or movement. The heroes could be different, we discussed. More Diverse.
It was exciting to bring to life an entire roster of heroes that would be both future and current versions of ourselves. We also wanted them as friends. We knew that if we could cast the right combination of heroes, we’d deliver tantalizing asymmetry and unique gameplay opportunities for players with a broad range of playstyles.
They could be heroes if we gave them our support Invested in.

Nightwing and Batgirl were defined in large part by their relationship and closeness with the Dark Knight. There are all graduates — as our Game Director Geoff Ellenor put it — of the “Batman school of crimefighting,” but throughout their stories, they experienced their greatest growth when forced to step out of the shadow of their famous mentor. Batman, a hypercompetent, fully realized paragon of knowledge, preparation and undhakable conviction is the ultimate example of Batman, but this new generation of Batman-adjacent heroes has plenty of room for growth, many challenges, and limits to conquer.
These heroes, though characteristically gritty at times given Gotham City’s darkness, also had room to mature. They could be reckless, petulant, naïve, self-absorbed or arrogant occasionally because that’s how real people are.They could, however, grow past their youthful infancy if they had to. It would be a great opportunity for them to become more human and better heroes, if they are forced to confront the challenges of adulthood as super-heroes.

And as we continued talking on into the day, it became clear that to give our upstart heroes — and the players — the room they needed to evolve and express their differing styles and abilities, to become the bigger symbols Gotham City needed, we would have to take away the certainty in their world. We’d have to remove the support structure that had always been there. We would need to force them to face the challenges and threats that they’d been insulated from up until now.
Therefore, we created a world where Batman is not omnipresent.

We did it to upset the status quo of Gotham’s criminal ecosystem and remove the checks on its excesses, thus setting up the story of Gotham Knights. However, it was also necessary to place the pressures that our heroes needed (not just the one they choose to play).
