Review – Warcry: Heart of Ghur is Warhammer at its best
WarcryIt was a surprise that Games Workshop had announced this in 2019. After the publication of Warhammer 40,000: Kill TeamThe community was ready for another mini-skirmish, but this time it would be set in the fantasy realm of Warhammer Age of Sigmar. The appeal was similar — a meaty game that only requires a handful of miniatures to play, and a system with the potential for strong narrative campaigns and a bustling competitive scene. Both critics and fans loved the result. Ghur: Heart of WarcryThis is the second Warcry box set, released to retail in August, and it marks a simple yet effective revision of what was already Games Workshop’s best ruleset.
Heart of Ghur The Gnarlwood is where it all happens. It’s a swampland that has been altered and taken over by the extraterrestrial bleeding force. The wicked surroundings protected its treasures from carnivorous animals and malevolent beasts.
It includes enough terrain and a board thick to be used as a battlefield, two full warbands, and dozens of other items for play. Rotmire Creed, an alchemist group of plague-wielding plague-worshippers who have a psychotic bent on protecting their territory from Horns of Hashut (a vicious band of despots intent upon destroying the land and all they find), are dedicated to this mission. While these two factions of heinous Chaos-worshippers are featured in this release’s main storyline, other warbands from across Games Workshop’s product line can also enter Gnarlwood in search of alien artifacts.
A large part of its appeal is the unique location Heart of Ghur. One of the strongest features of Games Workshop’s skirmish titles — Kill Team, NecromundaAnd even more Blood Bowl to some extent — is the ability to create smaller warbands of just a handful of figures from your favorite army. A full-fat army costs more than a smaller warband. Age of SigmarAn army could cost several hundred dollars minimum. Warcry You could make four to five warbands at the same cost. Virtually everything and anything can be made from this. Age of SigmarThis page contains all the product information and is free to view online.
What is more? Warcry The game’s amazing flow and rapid pace are what sets it apart among its peers. It’s a very energetic game, as scenarios and terrain layout are generated randomly. To determine the battlefield layout and goals, several decks of cards are drawn and shuffled. Every procedurally-created encounter has a twist. This allows for unforeseen rules modifications and strategic twists. Twists make for some of the most fascinating aspects of the game. Warcry. Some of these results in enhancements for all players, like fighters getting an extra point of toughness. Others alter the standard movement and combat rules. The tactical factors are influenced in such a manner that players can alter their strategies and adjust to an ever-changing situation.
The game is similar in that players must roll small amounts of dice each round and divide their results into single, double, or triple pools. For faction-specific abilities, doubles and triples can be used for initiative. The participant who has the highest number of singles wins the round. It allows for unexpected combat boosts and aggressive maneuvers. This system I love. Kill Team’s tactics cards, which require a lot more study. These cards require a lot more study. Warcry you simply have a small chart that’s easy to reference and internalize.
The activation takes place by each player, and the players alternate back-and-forth. Even though activation is simple and the combat system very basic, there are many tactical considerations. Interactive terrain and objective-based play provide texture. There is also a battleground that allows for warriors to exit and enter during the course of the battle.
WarcryThis game is very vertical, as your troops have the ability to scale structures or leap over gaps. The fast-paced conflicts are enhanced by this cinematic effect. This also encourages creative terrain modeling.
The core of the company is Heart of Ghurist almost the same as the preexisting Warcry ruleset. However, it moves the game forward in 2 key areas.
One of the most notable features is the invention of a reaction mechanism. The new reaction mechanism allows fighters trigger interrupts that are unique using the triple and double power dice. It’s an elegant system that evokes the overwatch mechanic common to many science fiction-themed miniatures games. Players may be able to react to an opponent’s charge by attacking them first, or fire off a ranged attack when someone moves into their line of sight. Every faction will have a unique response depending on the situation and their fighting style. It’s a wonderful addition to the game as it enhances the dynamism and flow of conflict, perfectly integrating into the alternating activation structure. It’s surprisingly smooth and feels as though it always belonged.
Heart of GhurCampaign play is also boosted. This system closely resembles the Path to Glory campaign systems. Age of Sigmar. The Warband story objectives have been integrated in existing scenarios. This allows players to follow their personal narrative and gain quest points. The quest rewards players with improved fighters or powerful artifacts when they complete it. You will find that the quest adds another layer to your game. This allows you to have a richer and more satisfying gaming experience.
Warcry’s new territory management system is similarly fantastic. Your force can send soldiers out to seek fortune and explore new territories, but this could be dangerous for their health. These are shades of the turf system. NecromundaThis feels like an older, more dramatic addition that fleshes out the Gnarlwood setting.
Overall, much of what’s been presented in this box is simply fantastic. This system is not too complicated, and it retains the spirit of its original purpose. Warcry special. Yet it’s been noticeably improved in an elegant and refined fashion.
The set’s value is adequate from a price perspective. If taken in isolation, it may even be strong. However, it is difficult to overlook how amazing the original was WarcryIt was the core box. While the warbands here are just as intriguing as the previous group, the initial terrain set was one of the best contained sets of scenery Games Workshop has ever released, so it’s difficult for Heart of GhurTo measure up. You can still find the Gnarlwood as a great place to shed blood. It is alive with the help of spiteful trees, and even gleaning skulls.
Heart of GhurAlso, it introduces the Gnarlwood. This environment will be continued to explore with additional boxes sets and terrain during this season. Warcry. The significance of the setting extends far beyond the boundaries of this skirmish match. Both Age of SigmarAnd Warhammer Underworlds are releasing titles in this locale, as the theme will touch all of Games Workshop’s fantasy products.
It’s a great start. Warcry’s The second age. My imagination and passion are primed for the supplements to come and for Games Workshop’s best game to continue its reign.
