A London American Werewolf

Genre: Horror/comedy
Run time: 1h 37m
Director: John Landis
Cast: Griffin Dunne and David Naughton

The shaggy horror comedy features Naughton and Dunne playing Jack and David, college students who meet a lycanthrope and have their lives forever changed. In visitations from beyond the grave, Jack begs David to off himself so he won’t attack other people, but David may have a thing going with the woman who nurses him back to health. Rick Baker’s prosthetic effects, still as amazing and captivating as in 1981, add an extra dimension to this oddball movie.

Blood and Bone

Michael Jai White as Isaiah Bone in Blood and Bone

Image: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Genre: Martial arts/action
Run time: 1h 33m
Director: Ben Ramsey
Cast: Michael Jai White, Julian Sands, Eamonn Walker

I’m a big fan of direct-to-video action movies, and specifically ones of the martial arts variety. How did I get that passion? A special week in which I saw three of my most favorite films: Day of Reckoning for the Universal Soldier, The Last Man Standing: Undisputed IIAnd Blood and Bone.

Blood and BoneMichael Jai White, who also stars in Undisputed IIStarred in and wrote the script. Black DynamiteIsaiah Bone, an ex-Marine who was also a former-con but is now an amazing martial artist, plays Isaiah (yes). Pinball, a promoter (Dante Basco), convinces him to join an underground fighting ring. This puts him in contact with Eamonn Walker (a mob leader) and many other capable fighters.

White will be fighting former pro fighters Bob Sapp, Kimbo Slice and Matt Mullins in the movie. There are many more exciting fights. The stunning choreography makes full use of White’s incredible physicality and unbelievable kicking ability, and it’s a terrific display of hard-hitting bodies in motion. —Pete Volk

Loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, the movie stars Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz, a rich and popular student who takes the “tragically unhip” new girl Tai (Brittany Murphy) under her wing.

Body Snatchers Invasion

A man (Donald Sutherland) examines the face of a body enmeshed in a strange web-like skin of sinuous fibers.

Image: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment

Genre: Sci-fi/horror
Run time: 1h 55m
Director: Philip Kaufman
Cast: Donald Sutherland. Brooke Adams. Leonard Nimoy

Philip Kaufman’s 1978 remake of Walter Wanger’s 1956 sci-fi horror film updates the original’s setting from a rural California town to the bustling heart of downtown Los Angeles. Matthew (Donald Sutherland), and Elizabeth Brooke Adams (Brooke Adams) are two co-workers and scientists who discover a horrible secret. Humanity has been overtaken secretly by plantlike extraterrestrials bent on taking over the planet.

Featuring terrific supporting performances by Jeff Goldblum and Leonard Nimoy, not to mention a brilliant cameo by Kevin McCarthy (the star of the 1956 version), Kaufman’s film is a savvy reinterpretation that updates the original film’s premise without losing any of its menacing paranoia. 1978’s Body Snatchers InvasionThis film is celebrated as one of the best cinematic remakes ever made and one of most influential works in sci-fi horror cinema. From the film’s otherworldly opening to its iconic and shocking conclusion, it’s hard to argue otherwise. —TE

Jackie Brown

Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) and Max Cherry (Robert Forster) look lovingly at each other in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown.

Genre: Crime drama
Run time: 2h 34m
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Cast: Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster

There’s no better time than the present to watch the best Quentin Tarantino movie ever (and by some margin). It was what I said, and it is exactly what I meant.

Adapted from Elmore Leonard’s terrific novel Rum PunchThe crime thriller is starring Pam Grier (unmatched) as a flight attendant, who is caught taking money back from Mexico for an arms dealer (Samuel L. Jackson). The two form an unlikely bond when Robert Forster, a bail bondsman, is sent to her rescue.

You have many reasons to fall in love Jackie Brown — Tarantino’s more annoying writing tics are significantly dampened by the fact that this is an adaptation, and the electric cast includes Robert De Niro, Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton, and a young Chris Tucker. My favorite thing about this film is the way it’s so romantic. The chemistry between Grier and Forster as two people in their middle ages unexpectedly falling for each other is electric, and it’s one of my favorite movie pairings to ever grace the screen. —PV

Mary and the Witch’s Flower

A red-haired girl in a purple hoodie gazes in astonishment at her glowing hands while holding a broomstick under her left arm and surrounded by the limbs of a gigantic tree.

Studio Ponoc/GKIDS

Genre: Adventure/fantasy
Run time: 1h 43m
Director: Hiromasa Yonebayashi
Cast: Hana Sugisaki, Yūki Amami, Fumiyo Kohinata

Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s anime adaptation of Mary Stewart’s 1971 children’s book The Little BroomstickThis story is about a girl named Mary, who after following a strange cat deep into a nearby forest, is taken to an amazing boarding school by flying broomstick. Mary learns magic there and discovers an amazing secret about a flower with extraordinary magical powers that could threaten the world if it is not used properly.

Films like “The Last Jedi” may lack thematic and emotional clarity that films such as these have. Kiki’s Delivery ServicOr Princess Mononoke, Mary and the Witch’s Flower is nonetheless a visually pleasing film and an earnest love letter to Studio Ghibli’s body of work by some of the studio’s most talented former artists and animators. —TE
