40K Necromunda is going back to the Ash Wastes, details on the new release
Warhammer 40,000 spin-off game NecromundaIs getting an enormous new expansion called Necromunda: Ash Wastes. The announcement, made live from the Las Vegas Open tournament late Thursday night, was fairly vague, but that’s par for the course with Games Workshop. You could get a whole box, some kits, hardcover sourcebooks, or all three. Fans are delighted at the long-awaited expansion of the beloved miniatures game. We’ve included the animated trailer above.
Original NecromundaGame is a skirmish-type game for small units that only requires a few models. It was released in the mid-’90s, and was supported by novels and even a magazine. It received a huge reboot in 2017 and is now one of Warhammer 40,000’s most popular features. You can find several boxes with terrain and individual kit models, as well as a number of sourcebooks. There is even an excellent first-person shooter game. Fans have hoped for the Ash Wastes expansion’s return for a while.
Tradition has taught that the act of taking action is Necromunda It takes place in the towering, violent hive-city that bears the same name. The tower is a tower measuring kilometers high and is ruled by heavily armed gangs. Ash Wastes are the remaining surface. That’s where roving bands of nomads eke out a meager existence while massive armored convoys move from point to point.
It’s basically Mad MaxThe year is 40,000 and the community is thrilled.
“I was freaking out, absolutely,” said Steve “Hivescum” Uden in an interview with Polygon. He and and Chris “Underhiver” Iddon are co-hosts of the Necromunda-themed podcast Sump City Radio. What’s shocked him the most, however, has been the positive response among the tight-knit community of hobbyists online.
“I can’t recall having seen a single negative response,” he continued. “There’s been the ones where it’s like, ‘It’s not what I hoped for.’ But there’s not people, you know, been very, very negative about it as a which for online communities with regards to miniatures is quite a big [deal].”
According to Games Workshop, the product is currently in development, but we don’t know what phase of development and we don’t know when the release date is. But that’s actually great news for hobbyists, who can get started kitbashing — that is, slapping together bits from different unrelated mode kits — right now. Your rusty cars and weird troops will work in the game. Maybe. It might not. It will serve as good practice when the official rules and kit start to roll out.
Ash Wastes have become so well-known that many players have built vehicles and soldiers over the years, some even creating their own rules. We’ve included some of the best examples — curated by the gang at Sump City Radio — below.
