13.4 Million PS5s Sold Despite Console Component Shortages

Sony’s unprecedented success is attributed to music products, recent developer acquisitions, and the popularity of the PlayStation 5, among many other things. B VGC report states that “Sony enjoyed its biggest revenue and operating profit ever for a Q2 window.” Moreover, a total of 13.4 million PS5s have been sold despite component shortages.
Sony’s games division has garnered almost $6 billion in revenue between July and September. Similar to the above, in the same period, nearly $6 billion has been earned by Sony’s games division. This is 1 million more revenue than during the first quarter. – compare that ridiculous number to the meager 200,000 PS4 units sold in the same period. Yet, PS5 availability remains a matter of dispute for PlayStation lovers around the globe.
HirokiTotoki, CFO discussed the plans to increase investment in both development and console semiconductors to counter global pandemics.
“The shortage of semiconductors has impacts in various areas and through various measures, we have been taking some action. PS5’s target was to sell a certain number of units this year. We have now secured enough chips to meet that goal. Regarding the supply of semiconductors, we are not concerned.”
The target number wasn’t specified unfortunately. Nevertheless, PS5 games are hitting financial highs with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales surpassing 6.5 million copies sold, Demon’s Souls sitting at 1.4 million, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart sailing past 1.1 million purchases. SIE and first-party titles have raked in substantial revenues for 2021, even with part shortages. The holiday season is just around the corner.
