Xbox Head Phil Spencer Says Call Of Duty Will Stay On PlayStation As Long As The Platform Exists
Phil Spencer, Xbox CEO and Microsoft Gaming CEO has said that the Call of Duty series will continue to be available on PlayStation, provided Activision Blizzard is acquired.
The news is reported by Spencer, who said that Activision Blizzard would continue releasing Call of Duty titles on Sony consoles for as long “as there are PlayStations out there to ship too.” Eurogamer.
Spencer stated that “We are not taking Call of Duty on PlayStation.” Spencer stated, “That is not our intention. That is not our intention. Our intention is to continue shipping Call of Duty on PlayStation so long as there are PlayStations available. We’ve also done the same thing with Minecraft ever since that console was ours. While we’ve increased the number of places that people can play Minecraft in different locations, it hasn’t decreased the numbers. This is good news for the Minecraft community and I hope to continue doing the same when we consider where Call of Duty could go over time.
Spencer touched on the ongoing acquisition further, noting that it is currently in the regulatory stage, which is where Spencer and others speak to regulators and answer their questions.
Spencer stated that she was “pretty confident” in closing the deal. “Spending time talking to regulators. They’re asking honest questions about large deals, like you mention. [the]Microsoft made the most significant deal, I did it.
If everything goes according the plan, then the acquisition should pass regulatory steps and be completed by June 2023. Sony, however, has been critical of the deal. They claim that Xbox purchasing Call of Duty in its first-party format would unfairly affect PlayStation users. I’m curious to see what Sony and PlayStation think about Spencer’s comments on Call of Duty.
