Xbox Gaming Revenue Down, But Game Pass Subscriber Base Continues To Grow

Xbox Gaming revenue has been declining across most fronts. However, its Game Pass subscription base saw continued growth.

Microsoft yesterday released the second quarter financial results of its 2023 fiscal year. It revealed that Xbox gaming revenues fell 13%. Microsoft has noted that Xbox content, including monetization in third party games and first-party programs, decreased 12%. But, the decline was still comparable to the strong prior year. This is not surprising considering that Xbox 2022’s performance was less than the previous year.

The financial results show that the 12% decrease in Xbox Game Pass subscriptions is partially offset. Xbox revenue also fell 13%. Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, revealed during an earnings conference that Xbox’s active monthly users had surpassed 120million in the quarter. IGN. Nadella stated that Microsoft anticipates another year-overyear decrease next quarter as a result of a comparable situation to this quarter.

Analyst for video games Benji-Sales (on Twitter)He offered his opinion on these financial results. He stated that Xbox’s revenue from gaming and performance is more important than the hardware’s decline, though he was less concerned about that.

“I am less concerned about overall Gaming Revenues and Software performance. The numbers are falling, which is to be expected when you consider how low the year was for 1st Party content. Hardware is more worrying. Hardware is a sign of declines in an age when it’s too early.

Benji Sales and others noted that Xbox has been lacking in quality over the last quarters. But, it looks like 2023 will be the Xbox Series X/S biggest year, with Redfall, Starfield and Forza Motorsport all expected to come out this year.

Today’s Xbox Developer Direct should provide more information about these games, and Starfield will be featured in an exclusive Starfield showcase that Xbox is creating.
