WrestleQuest This is a love letter both to this beloved video game genre as well as this intense, compelling, and sometimes silly sport. Both art forms have many things in common, including a strong focus on the storyline, large-scale characters, the excitement of battles, and dramatic drama.

The RPG formula was wrestlified to be bigger, bolder and more powerful than ever.
What is that? Let’s elbow drop in to see how we wrestlified JRPG combat, tropes, and more. But first, let’s take a look behind the baby oil at what WrestleQuest It is.

Definition of Wrestlification
WrestleQuest takes JRPGs and explores them through a wrestling lens – but what does that mean? How do you “wrestlify” something?
The process of wrestlingification involves making an event, game or person more intense, dramatic and sweaty. In wrestling, sports rivalries can become life and death situations, trash talking becomes catchphrases, and characters are brought to life for generations. It’s about taking dull game design elements and breathing new life into them, like a wrestler changing their gimmick.

It was a process that we applied to JRPGs in all their aspects, from reviving the tired combat system to updating old themes.
JRPG Combat evolves
Our primary design goal is to create a product that will be able to satisfy the needs of its users. WrestleQuest The idea was to improve the JRPG formula. Many of us grew up with turn-based battle systems, and I think we can all admit that they can get boring after a while – how many battles have you won by simply spamming the “attack” command?

WrestleQuest The drama, action and spectacle from pro wrestling matches is used to increase the intensity and excitement of JRPG combat. We started by using hand-drawn cartoon animation. The pixels are stunning and each suplex or piledrive is animated. The battles will be fun to watch, play and stream.
We then put each battle before a live crowd. Just like a real wrestling match, they came to see some hard-hitting moves and spectacle, so don’t let them down!

Relatedly, the Hype Meter is an indication of this live crowd’s engagement with the fight. If you just hit the “attack” button on auto-pilot, the crowd will get bored, and the Hype Meter will drain out. Your enemies will become stronger when that occurs. But, if you mix up your strategy and put on a good show, then you’ll fill the meter and unlock bonuses, like power buffs and additional XP!
The battle is filled with triggers and events which require that you pay attention. Timed button pressing, units that bounce off ropes or enemies you need to pin in order to win are all part of the battle. WrestleQuest Keep your head on the battle field.
There’s no better way to add spectacle to boss fights than by adding more fireworks
To make the boss fights memorable, we went to great lengths. Before these major confrontations, you’ll customize a walk-on routine, so you can style and profile down the entrance ramp. After that, you’ll hop on the mic for some smacktalk, trading insults with your opponent. They can both generate excitement even before the match begins!

Dramatic moments take things even further. They are difficult criteria to achieve during battles like not allowing your opponent to kick twice. But they reward you by giving you unique gear, and special cinematics.
Fixing JRPG tropes through Wrestlification
We’ve also thrown out stale JRPG elements wherever we can, and tapped in a wrestlified replacement.

For example, you won’t find locked doors and keys in WrestleQuest. Instead, tables bar your path – and in wrestling, there’s only one way through a table. To unblock a table, find a token that summons a wrestler and throw it through. The simple task of unlocking locked doors becomes a visually pleasing experience. It’s all about adding that wrestling spectacle into even the most basic aspects of JRPGs.

In the same vein, we’ve thrown tired character cliches out of the ring. We’ve turned stalwart knights and evil sorcerers into Machiavellian managers and heel-loving fans.
This is a story of champions
Both pro-wrestling games and JRPGs are built on narratives. The art of pro-wrestling involves storytelling. The art of pro-wrestling is based on stories that unfold behind the scenes, inside the ring and even beyond. Over weeks and months the plotlines culminate with drama, revelations, betrayals as well as unexpected twists.

What’s more, the wild world of wrestling is different than anything else. You’ve got scripts that go awry, forcing wrestlers to ad-lib in the ring. Real-life drama intrudes into the show. Divas antics threaten months of planning, and audiences are left with a disappointing no-show. Power-tripping managers can wreck the careers of rivals by alienating fans and even putting their promotions at risk.
It’s a fertile area that JRPGs had left unexplored until now. The game is called In WrestleQuest, you’ll meet unique characters with fresh stories stemming from a world that is begging to get the story-driven treatment it deserves.
