What are VTubers? – Polygon

VTubers or virtual YouTubers have exploded on the scene in recent years. They use voice, face or body tracking to manipulate a virtual avatar.

Kizuna AI – a fictional character developed by the Japanese firm Activ8 – popularized this form of media in 2016. In the years since, several agencies that train and recruit talent for virtual entertainment have emerged.

A majority of VTubers are inspired by Japanese idols and anime due to their Japanese roots.

VTubing, despite its niche roots, is much more than a passing fad for anime nerds. VTubing is likely to continue growing as technology advances and access increases over the next few years.

I spoke to several VTubers about their experience as VTubers. These included CodeMiko and Nyanners. Watch the video and learn more about VTubers’ origins, as well as the future of VTubing.
