Polygon readers: The Academy Awards season returns!
2022 was an amazing year for movies. There were many great blockbuster films from around the globe and the U.S., as well as great genre options and excellent arthouse fare.
With the Oscar nominations officially out, there’s no better time to catch up on the awards season contenders before the ceremony on March 12. Here’s a full breakdown of the nominated movies and where to watch them.
Nominations for Best Picture
Avatar: The Way of Water
It is what it is James Cameron’s long-awaited follow-up to the 2009 new sci-fi classic, which has dominated the box office since release. The technological wonders of underwater motion capture are on full display as usual in a Cameron movie. It is also quite long — over three hours (no, there are no plans for a longer director’s cut) — so here’s our guide on planning your bathroom breaks. A third movie, yes.
You should be watching: The Way of Water Avatar It is currently only available in theatres. Although the movie is currently in theaters, it will soon be digitally available to rent or buy and available for streaming on Disney Plus.

It is what it is Polygon’s No. Polygon’s No. 10 film of 2022 EEAAO This multiverse adventure is about a Chinese first generation immigrant, who owns a laundromat. He is then drawn into a multidimensional conflict that could destroy all of the known universes. Michelle Yeoh shines in the movie — she’s been one of our favorite performers for quite some time, and it’s a breath of fresh air to see this kind of role for her in a Hollywood movie — and the directing duo (known as the Daniels) went for all-out visual excess.
You should be watching: Everything at Once Showtime is available streaming through Showtime. This includes Showtime through Prime Video and Showtime via Paramount Plus. Showtime also streams through Hulu. You can also purchase it digitally on Amazon, Apple TV and Google Play.
Watch The Banshees of Inisherin

It is what it is Polygon’s No. Martin McDonagh, the writer and director of 3 is also one of his most important works. This movie is both funny and sad. It depicts the end of an old friendship that has been broken up and the sacrifices made by each party to stand for their rights.
You should be watching: The Banshees from Inisherin It is available for streaming via HBO Max. You can also rent it or buy it digitally on Amazon, Apple TV and Google Play.
Elvis Where To Watch
Warner Bros.
It is what it is Baz Luhrmann is a master of opulence and brings his unique style of visual excess into a story that’s well-suited to it. It tells the story of Elvis Presley who was one of the most important figures in the 21st Century. Austin Butler shines as the King of Rock ’n’ Roll, and the musical performances throughout the movie are electric.
You should be watching: Elvis It is available for streaming via HBO Max. You can also rent it or buy it digitally on Amazon, Apple TV and Google Play.
Top Gun on Maverick: Where can I watch it?
Photo: Scott Garfield/Paramount Pictures
It is what it is Tom Cruise’s latest stunt-heavy action thriller, for which he trained the other actors to fly real jet planes for maximum fealty and audience immersion. Top Gun: The remake is even more impressive than the original. It takes inspiration from an animated short and delivers the same blockbuster movie that brought millions back to the cinemas.
You should be watching: Maverick: Top Gun Paramount Plus, MGM Plus are streaming. You can also rent it or buy it digitally on Amazon, Apple TV and Google Play.
Watch The Fabelmans from Wherever You Are
Amblin Entertainment
It is what it is Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical reflection of the power of images, the allure of cinema, and the conflicts between making art and having a healthy family life. One of the best movies of the year (and a standout entry in Spielberg’s recent output), it’s a thoughtful, beautiful meditation on the arresting power images have over us.
You should be watching: Fabelmans It is now available digitally for purchase at Amazon, Apple TV and Google Play. Peacock will soon be able to stream it, although no exact date has been set.

It is what it is Polygon’s No. 6 movie of 2022, Todd Field’s explosive drama follows a world-famous conductor whose life begins to fall apart when allegations of abuse surface against her. This is more than just a rant about cancel culture. TárThe film is an intimate character study that Cate Blanchett delivers with a powerful performance. This was one of many great performances during a career full of them. It’s also got an ending for the gamers. What’s not to love?
You should be watching: Tár You can rent it or purchase it digitally on Amazon, Apple TV Google Play and Vudu. Peacock will stream it eventually, although no exact date has been set.
Watch the Triangle of Sadness from Where?

It is what it is Swedish director Ruben Östlund’s second Palme d’Or-winning movie won the top prize at Cannes this year. Like many other recent pieces of media, it’s about rich people at a nice place having a bad time — this time around, they’re on a cruise that sinks and strands them on an island.
