Warhammer: The Old Word will relaunch the classic tabletop era in 2024
This is the original settings for Warhammer Fantasy BattleIn 2024, Games Workshop will bring back the miniatures games that were virtually its foundation. Warhammer Old World. The announcement of the new tabletop game’s launch window was made Saturday during the Warhammer Day online streaming event on Twitch.
“We’re are delighted to be able to confirm that Warhammer: The Old World will be released in early 2024,” Games Workshop wrote in a news release. “As we get closer to release we’ll be revealing more details of this game of fantasy battles in the World of Legend, and revealing plenty exciting things including miniatures and books.”
The Old World is a reference to the Known World, the primary setting for Games Workshop’s fantasy products virtually since the company’s founding in the 1970s and 1980s. However, following the game’s eighth edition (launched in 2010), that world came to an apocalyptic end. Instead, the British publisher released Warhammer Age of SigmarIn 2015, the game was redesigned to include a new set of ethereal planes and larger monsters. In 2015, the focus of the battle was shifted to an ethereal and eternal plane of existence. This subtly altered the gameplay, with a smaller model count, more heroes and monsters, and a different nature.
Fans of PC gaming are well aware Old World’s setting quite well thanks to the Creative Assembly. Total War: Warhammer is set in the exact same place, at roughly the same period. It has been captivating fans with three real-time strategy interconnected games since 2016. The developers worked closely with Games Workshop designers to develop two new distinct factions, which had never been seen on a tabletop before. So far the Kislev and the Cathay only exist on digital battlefields — same with the Chaos Dwarfs, released earlier this year.
Old World is expected to return Games Workshop’s flagship fantasy product line to its more traditional medieval setting. Bretonnians will play a key role in the launch, with their knights in shining armour and sorceresses riding into battle wearing gossamer dresses. The names of the other factions, including elves or fantasy creatures are still to be confirmed. Games Workshop’s visit to Atlanta, for both the Grand Narrative Event and World Championships of Warhammer on Nov. 16-18 will reveal more.
