How do you define a “good shooter?” Immediate answers might include punchy phrases/words like “gun feel” or “kit customization.” Even so, it’s hard to define the gratification that comes with securing that coveted victory in ranked multiplayer or surviving a seemingly never-ending onslaught in single-player horde mode. The best shooter will have many appealing parts. – gripping atmosphere, weapon/ability balancing, enjoyable arenas, etc. The above features, regardless of their style (e.g. FPS or third-person), work great with polished gameplay, compelling narratives and improved mechanics. If you feel at home sprinting through multilayered environments, mowing down adversaries with precision and cunning, then the ten games on this list are definitely worth your time and attention.

Splitgate

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC

Splitgate was not well-known for some time, but it started to gain traction after an unprecedented 10 million open beta downloads. This is the true Cinderella tale of Halo-Portal, an energized hybrid. In a Stanford University dormitory, 1047 Games was able to begin its steady rise to fame. Back in 2019, we had the opportunity to play with Ian Proulx (CEO), who expressed his ambition of making an accessible but difficult-to-master game. Our ImpressionsThree years later, Splitgate’s nuanced mechanics and arcade aesthetic have piqued the interest of casual gamers and professional esports athletes alike. Season 0 was just announced at Gamescom in light of 1047’s prior decision to indefinitely extend Splitgate’s open beta period. Once the backend is sorted, expect the game’s full launch to follow. | Our Impressions

As our very own Dan Tack marvelously put it, “Returnal is a relentless nightmare that’s a dream to play.” A sci-fi horror roguelike, Housemarque’s first third-person shooter drips with eerie tension. Atropos, a stormy and hallucinogenic world, is home to serpentine leaves, old architecture, and other malformed species. Selene, an intergalactic explorationist trapped in dangerous territory. Titanfall 2

PlayStation 4 and One PC

Modern Warfare fans enjoyed the first Titanfall’s unconventionally speedy gunplay – wall-running, sliding, rappelling. Titanfall 2 added a story mode for single players that expanded on some of the original game’s sidebeats. You’ll star as rebel amateur pilot Cooper as he blasts his way through the imperial-like IMC army alongside B.T., his straight-laced titan. The multiplayer game featured more PVP playstyles that were appealing to different player levels thanks to the addition of gear and throwables. Titanfall 2 remains a favorite title with a loyal player base. Titanfall 2’s unique game experience and jaw-dropping visuals of titan destruction are still cherished and treasured today. The next title in this series will perfectly demonstrate this. |Our ReviewOur Review

Apex Legends

PlayStation 4 and Switch on PC, Xbox One, Switch

Apex Legends might not have been the Titanfall 3 fans were looking for, but it proudly wears the series’ lore on its sleeve. Apex, like many battle royales fighting for Twitch supremacy is not a pushover. Popular FPS has been able to boast 18 legends as well as constant event/cosmetic updates and fluid gunplay. Future and older titles alike have been influenced by the innovative mechanics of the ping system or respawn beacon. Apex Legends’ tenth season continues to be a success, with new characters and map modifications. Our ReviewA new game mode called Arenas converts the large-scale action into tense 3v3 bite-sized duels, echoing creative director Chad Grenier’s goals for expanding beyond the battle royale formula. | Our Review

Warzone: The Call of Duty

PlayStation 4 and One PC

Sure, Plunder – a cash-hoarding game mode with immediate respawns – is a nice addition to Warzone, but the battle royale experience really steals the show. Warzone simply is more powerful than any of its competitors. With 150 players in a given match (sometimes even 200), death-defying countermeasures with the implementation of Gulag duels and purchasable respawns, and in-game side objectives like bounties, you’re guaranteed long bouts of action despite the large maps. A bevy of different player-count playlists – Solos, Duos, Trios, and Quads – mean that you can drop into the battlefield with or without a dedicated squad whenever you like. Content rollouts, like other live-service shooters in this list will keep you in your seat for many hours. |Our ReviewOur Review

The Master Chief Collection Halo

Xbox One and PC

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the partially-remastered conclusion to the most famous space opera adventure in Xbox. It’s a must-have. Whether you’re an existing fan or a newcomer, Chief’s extensive odyssey is so accessible because of its streamlined mechanics (even Combat Evolved looks and feels solid!Unforgettable music and a continuous narrative. Bungie handed the baton over to 343 Industries several years ago. The critical reception hasn’t been consistent since the stellar Halo 4. Infinite is still looking to take the franchise forward with an open-world and a story that’s evolving through multiplayer. The master chief collection is the best primer. |Our ReviewOur Review

Doom Eternal

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One Switch, Stadia and PC

Doom Slayer (or Doomguy) and Master Chief are practically synonymous … except the former has a penchant for ripping demons to shreds and bathing in their innards. We loved Doom Eternal’s no-holds-barred, close-quarter combat – shotgun rounds give way to exposed rib cages and chainsaws literally eviscerate adversaries into blood-glazed chunks. Overwhelming enemy numbers help pace the action in increasingly frenetic ways; you’ll have to keep rotating around each arena to avoid pesky bottlenecks or death. Let’s also not forget about that heart-pumping soundtrack. Mick Gordon’s “ancient, alien” heavy metal soundscape ties the entire high-octane experience together with haunting guitar riffs and evocative basslines that match Doomguy’s sporadic heartbeat. For those who own next-generation consoles, Doom Eternal can also be upgraded. |Our ReviewOur Review

Destiny 2

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, PC

Can Bungie do no wrong? Destiny 2 surpasses the success of its predecessor. There are so many expansions that the live-service movie is endlessly replayable. The intricate story lies beneath its surface. As a Hunter, Warlock, or Titan, you’ll take to the stars to combat an evil force as old as the universe itself. You have hundreds of weapon options, while high difficulty strikes and nightfall missions may reward you with powerful gear. But, for now, let’s pivot to raids – Destiny’s quintessential cooperative PVE mode. Raids test your communication and reasoning abilities. Failure is possible at every checkpoint, even in small-scale shootouts. It is anticipated that the Lightfall expansion will be completed by 2022. This new period for looters promises to bring forth new opportunities. |Our ReviewOur Review

Rainbow Six Siege

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC

The latest Rainbow Six is a callback to methodical FPS titles like Counter-Strike and SOCOM. The match is made more intense by the use of claustrophobic maps that are filled with death holes and punishing time to kill ratios. Intuitive sound effects increase tension. While you may be able to rush into defense points, gun-blazing, like Siege is your average twitch player, consistent success requires patience and good holding angles. An ever-growing roster of playable operators – each equipped with ability kits and preferred firearms – means that the metagame is constantly fluctuating. But Siege is not for those who prefer to engage in intense firefights like Apex and Warzone. It is still one of the best competitive shooters. Extraction,Our ReviewSiege’s alien-infested story-mode counterpart, is set for a 2022 release and will likely showcase the same mechanical polish as its predecessor. | Our Review

Alyx Half-Life

PC

Alyx Vance and her alien-infested quest can’t be ignored. Half-Life 2’s prequel showcased VR technology in its full potential. Our ReviewLiterally ducking incoming bullets and other dangerous projectiles or doing simple actions like reloading or interacting with environmental objects built immersion in ways that controller or mouse and keyboard can’t emulate. It’s unfortunate that Half-Life: Alyx can only be played with VR equipment, making it one of the most exclusive games on this list. Nevertheless, Valve’s newfound commitment to its most beloved franchise might mean that more Half-Life games are on the horizon. It’s only a matter of time before the enigmatic G-Man graces our screens once again. | Our Review
